Metal fabricator cover letter example

Recruiters in metalwork want to know three things quickly: what you can fabricate alone, which welding processes you master, and whether you install on site.

A clear letter that answers these points, with one example of a job you followed from drawing to fixing, is enough.

Subject: Application: Métallier serrurier, [Company], [City]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I am writing to apply for the métallier position at [Company]. I have worked for [x] years in a metalwork firm in [City], where I fabricate and install stairs, railings and canopies for housing developers and private clients.

In the workshop, I work from the drawings prepared by our design office: cutting, drilling, MAG welding of steel and TIG welding of stainless handrails. On site, I take dimensions before fabrication and install the finished elements with a colleague, using an aerial platform when needed. On a recent project, the floor levels differed from the plans by several centimetres; I adapted the stair stringers in the workshop so that the installation could go ahead without delay. I am also careful with finishing, because most of our stairs and railings are left visible: clean welds, ground edges and parts prepared for galvanising or powder coating.

Your work on public buildings and your own design office are what attract me. I hold MAG and TIG qualifications and a CACES for aerial platforms, and I am used to working on occupied sites with other trades. I have a driving licence and can cover sites across [Region].

I would be glad to meet you or to complete a test in your workshop.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

What to highlight

  • Types of elements built: stairs, railings, canopies, frames
  • Welding processes and valid qualifications
  • Workshop, site or both
  • CACES and work at height
  • One project followed from drawing to installation

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not stating your welding processes and qualifications.
  • Describing only the workshop when the job includes installation, or the reverse.
  • Using vague phrases about passion for metal instead of a real project.
  • Forgetting to say which region you can cover for site work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I attach my welding certificates?

Mention them in the letter and resume with the process, standard and validity date. Bring copies to the interview. Attaching them is useful if the job ad asks for qualified welders, which is common for structural work and pressure equipment.

How do I apply through a temp agency?

Agencies place many métalliers on missions. Send the same resume, and in a short message state your processes, CACES and the distance you accept to travel. A mission can turn into a permanent contract when the firm is satisfied.

Is a test in the workshop normal?

Yes. Many firms ask candidates to weld a sample or assemble a simple part. Mention in your letter that you are available for one: it shows confidence and saves the employer time.
