Automation technician cover letter example

A good automaticien letter proves you can find a fault in the logic and fix its cause. Name your PLC environment, describe a stoppage you solved or a program change you made, and confirm safety testing.

For integrators, add your travel availability.

Subject: Automation Technician (Automaticien de maintenance): application

Dear [Mr/Ms Last Name],

Your [City] site is recruiting an automation technician for its filling and packaging lines. For [x] years I have been the automaticien of the maintenance team at [Company], working on Siemens S7-1500 PLCs, WinCC screens and servo drives, and your environment is very close to mine.

Most of my work is diagnosis. One of our palletisers used to stop several times a week on a vague « sequence fault ». By monitoring the program online, I found that a sensor bounced when a pallet arrived slightly off-centre, which blocked a step. I added a short filter, reviewed the sensor bracket with the mechanics and created an explicit alarm on the HMI. The palletiser has not stopped on that fault since, and the night shift no longer needed to call the on-call technician for it.

I test the safety functions after each change and save every program version on our server. I hold BR and B2V habilitations and take part in the on-call rotation.

I would be happy to discuss your lines and current projects.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply with experience on non-European PLC brands?

Yes. The logic transfers, and many French sites use Mitsubishi, Omron or Rockwell alongside Siemens and Schneider. Say which brands you know and that you are ready to learn the employer's environment, ideally citing a training course you have already started.

Should I attach program samples?

Usually not, because programs belong to your former employers. Describe what you did instead and offer to explain your approach in interview. A short personal project on a training PLC can be mentioned if you are starting out.

Is English useful for automation jobs in France?

Yes. Manufacturer documentation and some HMI texts are in English, and integrators commission machines abroad. Mention your English level, but remember that French is needed with operators and maintenance teams on French sites.
