Automation technician resume example

An automaticien works on the logic that drives automated machines: PLCs, HMIs, sensors, safety relays, servo drives and the networks that link them.

In maintenance, the job starts when a line stops on an alarm the operators do not understand. You connect your laptop to the PLC, watch inputs and outputs online, find the sensor that no longer switches or the step where the sequence is stuck, then fix the cause and sometimes modify the program to prevent a repeat. In projects, automaticiens wire and test cabinets, write or adapt programs and take part in commissioning on site, often far from home for several weeks. Safety functions such as emergency stops, light curtains and guard switches are part of the job and must be checked carefully after every modification.

Tips

  • List PLC families and software with your level: diagnosis, modification or full programming.
  • Separate maintenance experience from project and commissioning experience.
  • Name the machines or processes you worked on (palletisers, filling lines, robots).
  • Mention any obsolescence migration (S5 to S7, for example): it is a sought-after skill.
  • Specify how much travel you accept if you target integrators.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing « PLC programming » without the brand or level.
  • Forgetting machine safety, which recruiters always check.
  • Overloading the resume with every software you opened once.
  • No example of a stoppage you removed for good.

Working as an automation technician in France

Search for automaticien, technicien automaticien, automaticien de maintenance, technicien automatisme or, in projects, automaticien mise en service. Typical French diplomas are the BTS Conception et réalisation de systèmes automatiques (CRSA), the BTS Électrotechnique, the BUT Génie électrique et informatique industrielle (GEII) and licences professionnelles in automation. The profession is not regulated, but electrical habilitation under NF C 18-510, issued by the employer after training, is required to work in cabinets. Siemens and Schneider dominate French sites, with Rockwell common in some groups. Integrators recruit for commissioning roles with frequent travel, while production sites recruit for maintenance with on-call duty.

Frequently asked questions

Should I target maintenance or system integrators?

Both paths exist in France. Maintenance roles on a production site offer regular hours with on-call duty. Integrators (intégrateurs) and machine builders offer more programming and commissioning, with frequent travel. Your resume should lead with the experience that matches the target.

How do I show my PLC level honestly?

Use concrete wording: « online diagnosis and forcing », « modification of existing sequences », « writing a complete program for a new machine ». Recruiters often test this with a short exercise or by asking you to explain a recent change.

Is robot programming relevant?

Yes, if you have done it. Mention the brand (Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, Stäubli) and what you did: path adjustments, new programs or only restarts. Robots are common on French automotive and packaging lines.
