Sales representative resume example

A sales representative in France, simply called commercial or commerciale, sells a company's products or services to businesses or individuals, usually on a defined territory or portfolio.

A typical week splits between prospecting (calls, LinkedIn messages, trade fairs, visits to businesses in your area) and meetings with clients: understanding their needs, presenting the offer, sending a quote, negotiating price and terms, and closing. Field reps spend much of their time on the road with a company car; inside sales reps work by phone and video. Whatever the format, you keep your CRM updated, report to a sales manager on your pipeline and targets, and stay in touch after signature, because repeat business and referrals matter as much as new accounts. Pay usually combines a fixed salary and variable commission.

Tips

  • Give your results in a form you can prove: target reached, accounts opened, ranking in the team.
  • Say what you sold and to whom (SMEs, large accounts, individuals): sales recruiters filter on this.
  • Mention your driving licence for field roles; it is often a hard requirement.
  • List the CRM tools you used.
  • If you speak English or another language, specify your level: export and international accounts value it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing 'excellent communication skills' without a single sales result.
  • Inventing or inflating figures that a reference call could contradict.
  • Leaving out the type of client and sales cycle.
  • Forgetting the driving licence for field positions.

Working as a sales representative in France

Search for commercial, commerciale, commercial terrain, commercial sédentaire, chargé d'affaires, business developer or account executive in tech companies. The job is not regulated and no diploma is required, though the BTS NDRC, the BUT Techniques de commercialisation and business school programmes are the usual routes, often in work-study. Some reps have the VRP status, a specific French regime for traveling sales staff. Pay combines a fixed salary and a variable part defined in the contract, so read the commission plan carefully. Field roles nearly always require a driving licence; non-EU licences may need to be exchanged for a French one after a period of residence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diploma to work in sales in France?

No diploma is legally required, and many recruiters hire on results and attitude. The usual qualifications are the BTS NDRC (Négociation et digitalisation de la relation client), the BUT Techniques de commercialisation and business school bachelor's or master's degrees. Work-study is a common entry route.

How do I show results if I cannot share figures?

Use relative results: target reached or exceeded, ranking in your team, number of accounts opened in a given period, size of clients signed. If figures are confidential, say so and be ready to describe them orally in the interview.

What is the VRP status I see in some ads?

VRP is a specific French employee status for sales representatives who mainly prospect and take orders outside the company, with its own rules on pay and compensation when leaving. Most sales reps are ordinary employees; check the status in the offer.
