Technical sales representative resume example

A technical sales representative, technico-commercial in French, sells products that the customer cannot buy without technical advice: industrial equipment, building materials, HVAC systems, lab instruments, software, agricultural machinery.

The job starts with understanding the client's process or site. You visit a workshop to see how a machine is used, read plans for a building project or discuss specifications with an engineer. Then you design the solution, often with the company's engineering office, calculate a price, write a technical and commercial proposal and negotiate it with buyers who know the subject. After the sale, you stay involved: coordinating delivery and installation with the technical teams, handling the first questions and spotting the next need. Some roles are mostly in the field, others sedentary, answering requests from distributors or installers.

Experienced

Technical sales representative with [x] years selling heating and ventilation systems to installers and design offices in [Region]. I size solutions with the engineering team, write the proposals and follow projects from tender to commissioning.

Maintenance technician for [x] years on production lines, I want to move into technical sales. I know how clients use equipment day to day, what fails and why, and I can explain it in their language.

Tips

  • State your technical field precisely: hydraulics, electrical, IT, materials. Recruiters search by sector.
  • Mention both your technical background and your sales results.
  • List the technical tools you use, such as CAD viewers or sizing software, alongside the CRM.
  • Show a long project you followed from tender to installation.
  • Mention any technical certification or habilitation linked to the products, if relevant.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a pure sales resume and hiding the technical knowledge that justifies the role.
  • Or the reverse: listing technical skills without any commercial result.
  • Using internal product names that mean nothing to the reader.
  • Forgetting the type of clients: end users, distributors, installers or design offices.

Working as a technical sales representative in France

Search for technico-commercial, technico-commerciale, technico-commercial itinérant or sédentaire, ingénieur technico-commercial and ingénieur d'affaires for engineer-level roles. The job is not regulated as such, but some products require specific habilitations for installation or on-site work, such as electrical habilitations, so check the offer. The usual French diplomas are the BTS CCST, the BUT Techniques de commercialisation and engineering degrees. Field roles cover several départements and require a driving licence. Pay usually mixes fixed and variable parts. Foreign engineering degrees can be documented through an ENIC-NARIC France comparability statement.

Frequently asked questions

Which diploma leads to technical sales in France?

The BTS CCST (Conseil et commercialisation de solutions techniques), which replaced the BTS Technico-commercial, is the most direct route. The BUT Techniques de commercialisation, the licence professionnelle mention technico-commercial and engineering degrees with a sales component also lead there. Technicians often move into the role after some years of experience.

Should I be an engineer to apply?

Not necessarily. Many technical sales reps have a two-year technical or commercial diploma. For complex products such as automation or industrial software, companies may recruit engineers under titles like ingénieur technico-commercial or ingénieur d'affaires. Check the level asked in the offer.

How long should my resume be?

One page if you have under ten years of experience, two at most beyond that. Prioritise sectors, products and project examples. Recruiters in technical sales read the first lines to check the product match before anything else.
