Wealth manager resume example

A conseiller en gestion de patrimoine (CGP) starts every new relationship with a full picture of the client: income, property, savings, debts, marriage regime, children, business assets and tax situation.

From there you recommend a strategy, which in France often revolves around assurance vie contracts, PEA and securities accounts, retirement savings plans (PER), rental property and tools such as SCI. A good part of the job is about passing assets on: gifts, inheritance planning, sale of a family business. You work with the client's notary, accountant and sometimes lawyer. Some CGPs work in banks' private banking teams with a set client portfolio; others are independent and must find their own clients. Regulatory paperwork is heavy: suitability reports, client knowledge forms and documented advice for each recommendation.

Tips

  • List your regulatory status and certifications: AMF certification, ORIAS registration, CIF membership.
  • Describe your typical clients (business owners, executives, retirees) rather than "high-value clients".
  • Name the main technical areas you master: inheritance, retirement, property, business transfer.
  • Show how you find clients if you aim at an independent firm: network, partnerships, referrals.
  • If you come from a bank, explain how much freedom you had in product choice.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Promising returns or using investment performance as a selling point on the résumé.
  • Forgetting to mention compliance work, which employers check carefully.
  • Listing products without showing the advice behind them.
  • Hiding a sales target history that a recruiter will ask about anyway.

Working as a wealth manager in France

Advising on financial investments in France is supervised. Independent advisers need the CIF status (conseiller en investissements financiers), membership of an association approved by the AMF and registration with ORIAS; distributing insurance products such as assurance vie also requires insurance intermediary registration and annual training. In banks, staff advising on financial instruments must hold the AMF professional certification. Typical diplomas are a BTS Banque, a master's in wealth management or a university diploma in patrimonial management. Search for "conseiller en gestion de patrimoine", "CGP", "banquier privé" or "conseiller patrimonial".

Frequently asked questions

Which certifications should appear on a wealth manager's résumé?

The AMF professional certification, your continuing training under the DDA rules for insurance distribution, and any university diploma in wealth management. If you have held CIF or insurance intermediary status, mention it. These items tell an employer you can advise clients from day one.

Can I mention the assets I managed?

Yes, as an order of magnitude and without naming clients, for example the size of the portfolio you followed or the number of households. Make sure you do not reveal information that could identify a client, which would worry any recruiter in a profession built on discretion.

Is a banking background enough to join an independent firm?

It helps on technical skills and regulation, but independent firms will check two things: whether clients would follow you or whether you can build a network, and whether you are comfortable advising beyond your former bank's product range. Address both points on your résumé and in the interview.
