Sales manager resume example

A sales manager (responsable commercial) in a French SME or business unit owns the revenue target and the plan to reach it.

In practice, that means building the annual sales action plan, splitting targets by territory or segment, coaching a small team of field and inside sales reps, and still carrying some key accounts personally. A typical week includes a Monday pipeline review in the CRM, joint visits with a rep to unblock a large deal, a tender response with the technical team, a price negotiation with a purchasing department and a reporting session with the managing director. The manager also hires and onboards reps, sets up commission rules and feeds marketing with what customers say. The role often has cadre status and a variable part linked to results.

Tips

  • State the size of your team, your revenue scope and whether you carried accounts personally.
  • Show both management and selling: French SMEs rarely want a manager who no longer meets customers.
  • Use placeholders for targets and results, and be ready to explain each one in detail.
  • Name your sector and type of buyer: selling to purchasing departments is not like selling to small business owners.
  • Mention tenders, framework agreements or distribution networks if you have worked with them.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing only results with no context about market, team or starting point.
  • Hiding a period where you did not reach targets instead of explaining what you changed.
  • Using vague leadership words without a single concrete management action.
  • Forgetting your CRM and reporting tools.

Working as a sales manager in France

Search for responsable commercial or responsable commerciale, responsable des ventes, chef des ventes, responsable grands comptes or responsable régional des ventes. The role is not regulated. Employers usually expect a business school degree, a master's in sales or marketing, or a BTS or BUT followed by solid field experience. Most positions come with cadre status, often a forfait jours working time arrangement, a company car and a variable bonus. Business French is essential for negotiation and team management, and English is frequently required in export-oriented companies. Executive recruitment firms and the APEC job board publish many of these roles.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'responsable commercial' the same as 'sales manager'?

Mostly. In SMEs, the responsable commercial leads the whole sales function and may report directly to the managing director. In larger groups, the same title can mean a regional or segment manager under a sales director. Read the ad for team size and scope rather than relying on the title.

How do I show management experience without the title?

Describe what you did: trained new reps, ran pipeline meetings, coordinated a tender team, acted as interim manager. French recruiters accept this as evidence if it is precise. Put it under your sales role with dates, and be ready to give examples.

Should my resume be one page?

For a manager role, two pages is acceptable in France if the second page adds real content. Put your current scope and results on the first page, keep older positions short and avoid repeating the same responsibilities for each job.
