Store manager resume example

A store manager in French retail, directeur or directrice de magasin, is accountable for the whole site: sales, margin, payroll, safety, staff and the relationship with head office or, in a franchise, with the owner.

In a supermarket or hypermarket, you manage the department managers rather than the associates directly. Your week mixes store walks, a review of the trading figures, meetings with your managers, recruitment interviews and dealing with incidents, from a cold room failure to a customer complaint. You apply the chain's commercial policy while adapting it to your catchment area, prepare the annual budget, deal with employee representatives when the store has them, and make sure the premises meet fire safety and hygiene rules. Openings, renovations and inventory days are moments where the manager is very present.

Career change

After [x] years managing restaurants for a national chain, I want to move into retail store management. I bring P&L ownership, multi-team management, food safety and experience of working with head office standards.

Tips

  • Put your scope first: store format, team size and whether you owned the P&L.
  • State whether you worked in an integrated network or for a franchisee: the job differs.
  • Show one major project (opening, renovation, turnaround) with your role in it.
  • Mention French labour law and social dialogue experience if you have it; it is a key part of the role in France.
  • Keep it to two pages at most, with the most recent role in detail.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every task of a store without showing your personal decisions.
  • Using figures that you cannot explain or that are confidential.
  • Ignoring safety and compliance, which recruiters check carefully.
  • Presenting management experience abroad without explaining the size and context in French terms.

Working as a store manager in France

Search for directeur de magasin, directrice de magasin, responsable de magasin (often in smaller or specialised stores) or manager de magasin. The job is not regulated. Retailers typically recruit at master's level in management or business, or promote experienced department managers. The role is almost always a cadre position. In a franchise, the store owner employs you; in an integrated network, the chain does. The manager is responsible for compliance in premises open to the public (fire safety, hygiene) and for relations with staff representatives under French labour law, which requires solid professional French. ENIC-NARIC France can issue a comparability statement for foreign degrees.

Frequently asked questions

What qualifications do French retailers expect for store managers?

Many hire graduates of business schools or master's programmes in management or retail, often through management trainee programmes. Internal promotion is also very common: department managers become deputy managers, then store managers. Proven results can count as much as the diploma.

Is store manager a cadre position?

Yes, in most French retail chains the store manager is a cadre, often on a forfait jours, a working time arrangement counted in days per year rather than hours. Check the details in the offer, as they affect workload and rest days.

Should I include international experience?

Yes, but translate it into terms a French recruiter can compare: store size, number of employees, scope of decisions, reporting line. Explain the format of the store and the chain, since foreign brand names may not be familiar to them.
