Sales director resume example

A sales director (directeur commercial) sits on the management committee and answers for the company's revenue and commercial margin.

The work is less about individual deals and more about choices: which markets and customer segments to prioritise, how to organise the sales force between field, inside sales, key accounts and distributors, what pricing policy to apply and which targets to give each region. A director spends time with regional managers to review forecasts, joins the most strategic negotiations with large accounts or retail chains, arbitrates between sales, marketing, supply chain and finance, and presents results to the CEO, the board or the shareholders. Recruiting and developing managers, handling staff representatives on commission plans and managing the sales budget are also part of the job.

Tips

  • Start with scope: revenue, team size, channels, geography and reporting line.
  • Show strategic decisions and their effect, not a list of responsibilities.
  • Describe the context when you arrived (growth, crisis, merger, new market): it makes results meaningful.
  • Mention board or shareholder exposure, and any experience with private equity owners.
  • Keep older roles short and focus space on the last ten years.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using the same buzzwords as every executive resume without concrete decisions.
  • Giving revenue figures with no indication of margin or profitability.
  • Forgetting team development and recruitment.
  • A resume longer than two pages.

Working as a sales director in France

Search for directeur commercial or directrice commerciale, directeur des ventes, directeur commercial France, directeur du développement commercial or, in international groups, head of sales France. The role is not regulated. Candidates typically hold a business school or engineering degree, but experience and track record weigh more than the diploma. The position is cadre, often with a company car, a significant bonus and sometimes equity in companies owned by investment funds. Non-compete clauses are frequent and must be paid to be valid. Many roles are filled through executive search firms or APEC. Fluent French is essential to lead teams and negotiate with French accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include confidential figures on my resume?

Give orders of magnitude or relative changes rather than exact confidential figures. French executive recruiters understand discretion and will ask for detail in interview. What matters is showing the scale of your scope and the direction of your results.

Are sales director roles in France advertised publicly?

Some are, on APEC or LinkedIn, but many are handled by executive search firms. Keeping an up-to-date LinkedIn profile, staying in touch with specialised headhunters in your sector and using your network are as important as answering ads.

Is a French business school degree expected?

It is common but not compulsory. Recruiters look mainly at your track record, sector knowledge and leadership. A foreign MBA or degree is fine if you show results in comparable markets and enough French to lead teams and negotiate with French customers.
