Sales representative cover letter example

A sales manager reads your cover letter as a sales pitch. It should be short, targeted and show you have researched the company and its clients.

One concrete result and a sense of how you prospect are worth more than claims of motivation. If you can, mention the territory or market and show you already have an idea of how to approach it.

Subject: Application: sales representative, [Region] territory

Dear [Sales manager's name],

Your offer for a sales representative on the [Region] territory caught my attention because it covers the SME market I have been working on for [x] years with [Current employer].

I currently sell business services to companies of [x] to [x] employees. I build most of my pipeline myself: I combine morning calls with afternoon visits grouped by area, and I use local business networks and trade fairs to meet owners directly. Last year, I opened [x] new accounts and reached my annual target, mainly with clients who had never worked with us before.

One deal I am proud of is a manufacturer in [City] who had been using a competitor for years. Instead of pushing a lower price, I offered a trial on one site, followed it closely and came back with the results. The contract was extended to their other sites a few months later.

Your offer fits these SMEs well and I already have ideas on how to approach the industrial areas of the territory. I would be glad to share them in an interview.

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

What to highlight

  • What you sold, to whom, and on which territory
  • One deal or result you can explain
  • How you prospect and organise your week
  • Your understanding of the company's clients
  • Mobility and driving licence for field roles

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing yourself as a 'born salesperson' with no evidence.
  • Not adapting the letter to the company's market.
  • Writing a long letter: brevity is part of the test.
  • Ending without a clear call to action.

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention my target achievement in the letter?

Yes, briefly. Say whether you reached or exceeded your target, and over what period. Keep the detail for the interview. Recruiters will check consistency with your references, so stay accurate.

Can I apply for a sales job in France with English only?

Few field roles accept it, since clients expect French. English-only sales jobs exist in international companies selling abroad, often in Paris or Lyon, under titles like account executive or business developer. Even there, some French helps with colleagues and admin.

Should I follow up after sending my application?

Yes. For a sales role, a polite follow-up call or email a week later is expected and shows the persistence the job requires. Keep it short, recall your application and propose a time to talk.
