Sales manager cover letter example

The reader is usually the managing director or the sales director. They want to know whether you can lead people and still win deals in their market.

A good letter links your experience to their customers and their growth plans, gives a concrete example of a team or account you turned around, and shows how you would approach the first months.

Subject: Application for Sales Manager, [Company], [Region]

Dear [Name],

I am applying for the sales manager position at [Company]. Your plan to grow in the Grand Ouest with industrial maintenance contracts matches what I have been doing for the past [x] years at [Current company], with a team of field reps selling to plant managers and purchasing departments.

When I took over the team, territories had been drawn by postcode rather than by potential, and two reps spent most of their time on small accounts. I rebuilt the allocation with them, introduced a weekly pipeline review in the CRM and joined each rep on customer visits every month. We also set up a small tender unit with the technical department, which allowed us to win several multi-site framework agreements.

I still manage a handful of strategic accounts myself, as I believe a manager must keep in touch with customers to coach credibly. I hire reps for their listening skills as much as for their energy, and I explain commission rules clearly so that nobody is surprised at the end of the quarter.

I would be glad to share how I would approach the first months with your team, and to hear about your priorities for the coming year.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Do French employers expect a cover letter for manager roles?

Many still read one, especially in SMEs where the managing director recruits directly. Recruitment agencies may skip it but often forward it to the client. A short, specific letter showing you understand their market is a good way to stand out.

How do I explain leaving a team before the end of a plan?

Briefly and factually, if at all. The letter is not the place for details; one line such as 'after the merger of our two regions' is enough. Prepare the full explanation for the interview, focusing on what you achieved before leaving.

Can I apply in English?

If the company works internationally and the ad is in English, yes. Otherwise write in French or at least state your French level clearly. A sales manager in France will negotiate with French customers and manage French-speaking reps, so language is a real requirement.
