Maintenance technician cover letter example

A maintenance manager reads the letter to judge your technical range and your attitude during a breakdown. Mention the equipment you know, the technologies you can diagnose and one real fault you solved.

Say whether you accept on-call duty and shifts, because that often decides the shortlist.

Subject: Application: Industrial Maintenance Technician, [Company]

Dear [Mr/Ms Last Name],

I am applying for the maintenance technician position at your [City] plant. Your packaging lines use equipment I know well, and I would like to join a team that combines breakdown repair with real improvement work.

After a BTS Maintenance des systèmes completed in work-study, I have spent [x] years at [Company], a food plant running in 2x8. I handle breakdowns on filling and packaging lines, from mechanical issues to PLC faults on Siemens equipment. Last year, a conveyor kept stopping several times per shift: by analysing the CMMS history and the PLC alarms, I traced the problem to a misaligned sensor bracket, and the redesigned support we installed with the methods team ended those stoppages.

I also follow the preventive plan, take vibration readings on critical motors and prepare spare parts for annual shutdowns. I hold electrical habilitation BR and B2V, and I apply lockout procedures systematically before any intervention.

I take part in on-call duty and can work in shifts. I would be pleased to discuss your equipment and maintenance organisation with you.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention my interest in improvement projects?

Yes. Many sites want technicians who reduce breakdowns, not only repair them. One example of a recurring fault you eliminated shows this mindset. Keep it short and factual: the problem, your analysis and what changed afterwards.

Can I apply with a foreign technical diploma?

Yes. Industrial maintenance is not a regulated profession in France, so employers judge your practical skills. Describe the equipment you have worked on and your diagnostic method. You will probably need French electrical habilitation training, which employers often organise.

How formal should the letter be?

Polite and direct, without heavy formulas. A maintenance manager wants facts: equipment, technologies, habilitation, availability. One page with four or five short paragraphs is enough, ending with your availability for an interview or a site visit.
