Maintenance technician resume example

An industrial maintenance technician keeps production equipment running: presses, conveyors, packaging lines, compressors, robots. Part of the week follows the preventive plan generated by the CMMS (GMAO in French): checking belts and bearings, taking vibration or thermal readings, replacing filters.

The other part is breakdowns. The line stops, the operator calls, and you have to find out whether the fault is mechanical, pneumatic, electrical or in the PLC program, then repair it with the parts in stock or a temporary fix until the next planned shutdown. After each job you log the intervention, update the documentation and sometimes show operators how to avoid the fault. Many sites organise on-call duty (astreinte) and shift coverage.

Tips

  • Specify the technologies you troubleshoot: PLC brands, robots, hydraulics, drives.
  • State your electrical habilitation levels and their validity.
  • Show both preventive work and breakdowns, with a concrete repair example.
  • Name the industries: food, pharma and automotive have different standards.
  • Mention on-call and shift experience, which many employers require.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing « mechanics, electrics, automation » without any equipment or brand.
  • Forgetting the habilitation level, which decides what you can work on.
  • Describing tasks without a single result (fault solved, recurrence removed).
  • Mixing industrial maintenance with building maintenance without explanation.

Working as a maintenance technician in France

In France, search for technicien de maintenance industrielle, technicien de maintenance, électromécanicien de maintenance, technicien de maintenance polyvalent or automaticien de maintenance. The main diplomas are the BTS Maintenance des systèmes (options A, B or C), the BUT Génie industriel et maintenance, licences professionnelles in industrial maintenance and the Titres professionnels Technicien (supérieur) de maintenance industrielle. Work-study (alternance) is a very common entry route. Electrical work requires a habilitation issued by the employer under standard NF C 18-510, after training. Nuclear sites add their own clearances. On-call duty, shift work and planned shutdowns during holidays are frequent.

Frequently asked questions

Should I list PLC software on my resume?

Yes, with your real level. Write for example « Siemens TIA Portal: online diagnosis and minor modifications » rather than « PLC programming ». Recruiters distinguish technicians who read and diagnose programs from those who write them, and both profiles are useful.

Is electrical habilitation transferable between employers?

The training certificate follows you, but in France each employer issues its own habilitation title based on your training and the tasks you will do. Mention your levels and training date; your new employer will usually confirm them, sometimes after a refresher course.

How do I present work-study experience?

Present it as real experience with the company name, period and missions, and note that it was a work-study contract (alternance). French employers value it highly because you have already worked on production equipment under real conditions.
