Metal fabricator resume example

A métallier, often called serrurier-métallier in France, makes and installs the steel and aluminium parts of buildings: staircases, railings, balconies, gates, canopies, mezzanines, fire doors and light structural frames.

The job starts in the workshop, where you read the drawings from the design office, cut profiles with a saw or plasma, bend, drill and weld them, then grind and prepare the parts for galvanising or painting. The second half happens on site: you set out the anchors, lift the elements with a forklift, crane or aerial platform, and fix them with bolts, chemical anchors or site welds. Industrial métalliers also build steel frames for warehouses and maintain existing structures, sometimes on call.

Working as a metal fabricator in France

Métallier is not a regulated trade, but French employers look for a CAP métallier, a Bac pro ouvrages du bâtiment: métallerie, a BP métallier or the Titre professionnel métallier. Welding qualifications under ISO 9606 are often required, and CACES certificates for aerial platforms or forklifts are frequently asked for site installation. Search « métallier », « serrurier métallier », « métallier soudeur », « métallier poseur » or « charpentier métallique » for structural steel. Temp agencies place many métalliers, which is a common way in for foreign candidates.

Frequently asked questions

Is métallier the same as welder?

No. A soudeur focuses on welding, often in industry. A métallier fabricates whole building elements, welding included, and installs them on site. If your experience is mainly welding, apply to « métallier soudeur » or « soudeur » roles and describe the parts you made.

Do I need French welding qualifications?

Many employers ask for a qualification under the ISO 9606 standard, which is international, so a valid certificate from another country can be accepted. If yours has lapsed, the employer may have you requalified by an inspection body after a test weld.

Should I mention locksmith work?

Only if you did it. In France the serrurier-métallier trade covers both metalwork and lock fitting, but most job offers focus on fabrication. Locksmith experience can help for maintenance roles that include doors, access control and emergency call-outs.
