Laboratory technician resume example

A laboratory technician in French industry (technicien de laboratoire) runs the analyses that decide whether raw materials, intermediates and finished products can be released.

In a pharmaceutical or cosmetics quality control lab, a typical day means weighing samples, preparing solutions, running HPLC or GC sequences, checking pH, viscosity or water content, and recording everything in the lab notebook or LIMS according to good manufacturing practice. In a food or environmental lab, you may focus on microbiology, with plating, incubation and colony counts, or on water and soil analyses. Results out of specification trigger an investigation before anything is concluded. Technicians also calibrate and maintain instruments, manage reagents and waste, and sometimes help R&D by preparing trial formulations. Some labs work in shifts to keep up with production.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Laboratory technician with a BTS Bioanalyses et contrôles and a work-study year in a cosmetics quality control lab at [Company]. I carried out physico-chemical tests on raw materials and finished products, recorded results in the LIMS and followed GMP documentation rules.

Experienced

Analytical technician with [x] years in [pharmaceutical/chemical] quality control. I run HPLC and GC analyses, take part in method transfers and validations, handle out-of-specification investigations and maintain instruments under GMP.

Career change

Former [pharmacy assistant/production operator] retrained through a BTS Métiers de la chimie in work-study. I bring precision and familiarity with regulated environments, and I now carry out routine analyses and microbiological tests in a quality control laboratory.

Tips

  • List the techniques and instruments you use routinely, with the software.
  • Specify the regulatory framework: GMP, ISO 17025, food safety standards.
  • Separate routine analyses from method development or validation.
  • Mention the sector, because pharma, food and chemicals recruit differently.
  • Show one investigation or improvement you contributed to.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing « laboratory techniques » without naming any.
  • Mixing medical biology and industrial analysis without explanation.
  • Forgetting GMP or quality rules, which recruiters check first.
  • Listing instruments you only saw during training as routine skills.

Working as a laboratory technician in France

Search for technicien de laboratoire, technicien de laboratoire contrôle qualité, technicien analyses, technicien chimiste, technicien microbiologiste or laborantin. Usual diplomas are the BTS Bioanalyses et contrôles, the BTS Métiers de la chimie, the BUT Chimie and the BUT Génie biologique, sometimes completed by a licence professionnelle. Industrial and research laboratories are not regulated professions. Medical biology laboratories are different: there, technicians need one of the specific diplomas defined by French regulation, such as the BTS Analyses de biologie médicale. Pharmaceutical labs work under good manufacturing practice, and many testing labs are accredited by COFRAC to ISO 17025. Shift work exists in plants that release batches continuously.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work in a medical laboratory with an industrial lab background?

Not automatically. In France, technicians in medical biology labs must hold specific diplomas listed by regulation, such as the BTS Analyses de biologie médicale or the DETLM. Industrial quality control and research labs do not have this requirement.

Should I mention my academic lab projects?

Yes, if you are starting out, with the techniques you actually used. Present them briefly under education or projects, and give priority to internships and work-study in industry, which recruiters value more.

Is GMP experience transferable between companies?

Yes. Good manufacturing practice principles are common to all pharmaceutical sites, even if procedures differ. Mention the types of GMP documents you used and any audits or inspections you took part in.
