Subject: Technicien méthodes: application for the position in [City]

Dear [Mr/Ms Last Name],

I am applying for the methods technician position in your [City] plant. At [Company], a supplier of machined parts for the rail industry, I have spent [x] years in the methods department, between the design office and the workshop.

I handle the industrialisation of new parts: I define the sequence of operations, specify fixtures with our toolmaker, write the CAM programs and create the routings in SAP. During the last product launch, the first series showed long and irregular cycle times on one operation. After timing it on the floor with the operators, I changed the clamping method and split the operation between two machines, which stabilised the flow before the series ramp-up.

I also run improvement workshops. On our press line, a SMED project carried out with the setters and maintenance shortened changeovers enough to reduce batch sizes. These projects taught me that a good routing is one the operators helped write.

If useful, I can bring a routing and a work instruction I wrote (anonymised) to our meeting.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Processes and products you have industrialised
  • An improvement project (SMED, balancing, cycle time)
  • CAD, CAM and ERP software you use
  • Relationship with operators and other departments
  • Knowledge of the employer's sector

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing software without explaining what you produced with it.
  • Taking credit alone for a team improvement project.
  • Ignoring the employer's processes (machining, assembly, plastics).
  • Describing the methods department as a support function instead of showing what changed on the shop floor.

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention cost reduction results?

Only if you can explain them. Describe what changed, for example fewer operations or shorter changeovers, and keep any figures for the interview, where you can explain how they were measured. Unverifiable savings in a letter tend to make recruiters suspicious.

Can I apply to methods jobs in another sector?

Yes. Methods tools are the same across sectors, but standards and processes differ. Show that you have looked at the employer's products and name the processes you already know that apply to them.

Is English required?

It depends on the group. Plants belonging to international groups often use English for standards, audits and supplier exchanges. Give your level honestly; daily work with the workshop remains in French.
