Mechanical design draughtsman cover letter example

A design office manager wants to see in your letter that you can take a part from idea to drawing without constant supervision, and that the workshop will be able to make it.

Talk about the type of products you designed, your CAD tool and a design problem you solved. Keep it short and offer to show a portfolio.

Subject: Application: Mechanical Design Draughtsman, [Company], [City]

Dear [Recruiter's Name],

I have spent [x] years in a company building automated assembly lines, designing sub-assemblies in SolidWorks from the first layout to the drawing set sent to the workshop. I would now like to continue this work in your design office, which is why I am applying for the mechanical design draughtsman position.

On each project I start from the specification written by the project engineer, propose two or three concepts, then model the chosen option and size the standard components such as cylinders, guides and motors. I produce the manufacturing drawings with ISO GPS tolerancing and stay in contact with our machining and welding suppliers until the parts are assembled. On a recent transfer unit, I redesigned a welded frame as bolted folded sheet metal, which made it easier to adjust during commissioning.

Your company designs packaging machines for the food industry, where hygiene design and quick changeovers are central. I have already worked with stainless steel and washdown constraints on two projects, and I would like to go further in this field.

I can bring a short portfolio of assemblies and drawings to an interview. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,[First Name Last Name]

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply to an engineering consultancy rather than a manufacturer?

Consultancies place draughtsmen with industrial clients, so they look for adaptability: several CAD tools, sectors you have worked in and how quickly you got up to speed on a new project. Mention your mobility and your interest in varied missions.

Should I mention calculation skills?

Yes, if you size components or run simple simulations yourself. Say what you calculate, for example shaft sizing, bolted joints or simple FEA in SolidWorks Simulation. Do not oversell: complex calculations are usually done by engineers and recruiters know it.

Is it acceptable to write about personal CAD projects?

For a first job or a career change, yes. A personal project such as a 3D printed mechanism or a machine you modelled shows motivation and skills. Describe the problem, the solution and what you learned, as you would for a work project.
