Graphic designer cover letter example

The art director or creative director who reads your letter will spend more time on your portfolio. The letter should point to the right projects for them, show that you know their work, and tell them how you collaborate with clients and developers or printers.

Subject: Candidature graphiste junior, portfolio [link]

Dear [First name Last name],

I am applying for the junior graphic designer position at [Studio]. I discovered your work through the identity you created for [cultural institution], especially the way the typography adapts from posters to signage. My portfolio is here: [link].

After my DN MADe in graphic design, I spent a year in alternance at [Agency] in [City]. I worked on identities for local businesses, editorial layouts and campaign visuals, and I was in charge of preparing print files. I learned a lot from the printer's feedback and from the moments when a file came back with a problem.

Two projects in the portfolio are close to your work: the identity for [Festival], which had to work on a very small budget with two colours, and the annual report for [Organisation], which I laid out on a grid built to remain readable on screen and on paper.

I am available from [date]. If it helps, I can bring the printed proofs of the annual report, which show the grid better than a PDF. [phone], [email].

Best regards,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Should I design my cover letter?

Use the same header and fonts as your CV for consistency, but keep the letter readable and simple. Its role is to explain, not to impress visually. Many recruiters will read it as an email body anyway, so the text itself must work without layout.

How do I apply to agencies that do not advertise jobs?

Send a short spontaneous application to the art director with a portfolio link and one sentence about why their work interests you. Follow agencies' social accounts, attend design events in your city and ask for a short portfolio review rather than a job directly.

How should I mention freelance experience?

Group it under one heading with your status, the period and the main clients. In the letter, highlight what freelancing taught you: quoting, discussing directly with clients, managing deadlines alone. Agencies value that autonomy.
