UX designer cover letter example

UX recruiters read the cover letter quickly and then open the portfolio. The letter should point them to the right case study and show that you understood the product and its users, not only the job description.

Keep it short and make the portfolio link obvious.

Subject: Application: UX Designer, [Product Name]

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],

Before applying for the UX Designer role at [Company], I created an account on [Product Name] and went through onboarding. The setup is quick, but I hesitated at the step where I had to invite colleagues before seeing any data, and I would like to understand how your users experience that moment.

At [Current Company], I design for a B2B invoicing tool used by small accounting firms. Last year I led the redesign of invoice creation: I interviewed customers, mapped where they switched to Excel, and tested two prototype versions with them before handing over the final flow. Support requests on that feature dropped noticeably after release. The full case study is here: [Portfolio Link].

I work in a squad with a product manager and developers, and I spend as much time on specifications and edge cases as on screens. I also contribute to our design system and check new components against RGAA criteria.

In an interview, I can walk you through the research behind this case study, including the prototype we abandoned and why.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone]

What to highlight

  • One case study relevant to their product
  • Your research methods
  • How you work with product and engineering
  • Your view on a part of their product you tried
  • Accessibility knowledge when relevant

Mistakes to avoid

  • Talking about 'passion for user-centred design' without a single example.
  • Not linking to the portfolio or linking to a password-protected page without the password.
  • Criticising the company's product harshly.
  • Repeating the CV line by line.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a good idea to suggest improvements to their product?

One careful observation, framed as a question, shows interest and method. A full redesign in the letter is risky: you lack their data and constraints, and it can come across as presumptuous to the team that built it.

How long should the letter be?

Keep it under a page, three or four short paragraphs. The goal is to make the recruiter open a specific case study, so the link should be easy to spot and clearly connected to their product.

Should I attach my portfolio as a PDF?

A link to an online portfolio is usually preferred, but a light PDF of a few pages is useful for recruiters who forward applications internally. Make sure both versions tell the same story.
