Subject: Application for the Communications Manager position

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I followed the communication around the opening of your new research centre last spring, and I noticed how you involved local residents and schools. This is the kind of communication, close to the territory and to employees, that I have practised for [x] years at [Company], an industrial group in [Region], and the reason I am applying for the Communications Manager position at [Organisation].

At [Company], I lead a team of three people and work with a press relations agency. When the group announced the closure of one of our sites, I prepared the communication with the HR director and the site management: messages for employees before any external announcement, a briefing for local elected officials, and answers for the regional press. The announcement was covered without leaks or contradictory statements, and employees received the information in person.

I also redesigned our internal newsletter after a survey of employees on the production sites, many of whom had no company email. We now publish a printed version and short videos shown in the break rooms.

I would be glad to tell you more about how we prepared the site closure announcement, and to hear about your own projects.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone] | [Email] | [Portfolio link]

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply for a public sector communication role?

Local authorities recruit communication managers as civil servants, often through the « attaché territorial » competitive exam, or as contract staff. Show your understanding of public service, citizens as an audience and the rules of neutrality, especially before elections. Refer to the authority's projects and publications.

Should I attach examples of my work?

Add a link to an online portfolio rather than large attachments. Choose two or three pieces relevant to the role, such as a press kit, an internal campaign or a social media series, and mention them briefly in the letter.

How do I move from journalism to communications?

Highlight what you bring: knowledge of how newsrooms choose stories, writing speed, and a network of contacts. Be clear that you understand the change of role, from informing the public to representing an organisation, and give an example of how you would approach a press release differently.
