Communications officer cover letter example

The person who reads your letter is usually the head of communication, and sometimes a director general's office in the public sector. They will read your letter as they would read a text you wrote for them: structure, tone and typography count as much as content.

Subject: Candidature au poste de chargé de communication, réf. [reference]

Madam, Sir,

I am applying for the communications officer position at [Organisation]. For three years I have been working in the communication department of [Current employer], where I edit the internal newsletter, write press releases and organise events for staff and partners.

Last spring I coordinated the opening of a new site: invitation list with the director's office, press release and follow-up with local media, visit route, photo coverage and an article for the website the same evening. That day taught me to prepare a plan B for every step and to keep each department informed without overloading them.

I read your last two magazines and saw that you are opening the publication to residents' contributions. I have run a similar section and know how much patience and rewriting it requires. I am comfortable with InDesign and WordPress, and with tight validation schedules.

I would welcome the chance to bring a few of these documents to an interview, including the inauguration press kit. I can be reached at [phone] or [email].

Yours faithfully,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

What tone should I use for a public sector application?

Stay formal: « Madame, Monsieur » and a classic closing are expected. Show that you understand the public service context, the role of elected officials and the need for neutrality, particularly before elections, when communication by local authorities is restricted.

Should I attach samples to my letter?

If the application form allows it, add one or two short samples or a portfolio link. Keep the letter itself focused, and mention in one sentence what the reader will find in the samples so they know why to open them.

How long should my letter be?

One page. Communication managers expect you to be concise because that is the job: if you need two pages to present yourself, they will assume your press releases are too long as well.
