Mechanical design draughtsman resume example

A dessinateur-projeteur in mechanics turns a need expressed by an engineer or a customer into parts and assemblies that a workshop can actually make.

Most of the day is spent in a CAD tool such as SolidWorks, CATIA or Creo: modelling parts in 3D, building assemblies, checking clearances and producing 2D drawings with functional dimensioning and tolerances. You choose standard components from supplier catalogues (bearings, fasteners, cylinders), run simple strength calculations, and update the bill of materials in the PLM or ERP. Part of the job happens away from the screen: discussing feasibility with machinists and welders, going to the workshop when a part does not fit, or measuring an existing machine before a modification. In design offices that work for several clients, you may switch between special machinery, tooling and sheet metal projects within the same month.

[City] · [phone] · [email]

Profile

Mechanical design draughtsman with [x] years in special machinery and handling equipment. I take a project from the specification to the drawing set: concept layouts, 3D design in SolidWorks, component selection, basic calculations, drawings with ISO GPS tolerancing and follow-up with machining and welding suppliers.

Experience

Mechanical Design Draughtsman, special machinery design office, [City]

[month year] to present

  • Designed sub-assemblies for automated assembly lines in SolidWorks, from layout to complete drawing sets
  • Produced manufacturing drawings with functional tolerancing and reduced workshop queries on critical parts
  • Selected and sized pneumatic and linear motion components using supplier configurators
  • Created and maintained bills of materials in the PLM for [x] machines per year
  • Followed prototype assembly in the workshop and updated the design after on-site adjustments

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

BTS Conception des produits industriels graduate with a two-year apprenticeship in a special machinery design office in [City]. I modelled sub-assemblies in SolidWorks, produced manufacturing drawings and followed parts in the workshop until assembly.

Experienced

Mechanical design draughtsman with [x] years in special machinery and handling equipment. I take a project from the specification to the drawing set: concept layouts, 3D design in SolidWorks, component selection, basic calculations, drawings with ISO GPS tolerancing and follow-up with machining and welding suppliers.

Career change

Former CNC machinist retraining as a design draughtsman after a CAD certification. I know how parts are fixtured and machined, which helps me draw parts that are cheaper to produce, and I now work in SolidWorks on modelling and drawing production.

Tips

  • Put your CAD software and version near the top: French recruiters filter on SolidWorks, CATIA or Creo first.
  • State the sector and type of products: special machinery, tooling, automotive, aeronautics, packaging.
  • Prepare a short portfolio with screenshots of assemblies and drawings you are allowed to show.
  • Mention whether you work to ISO GPS standards, since the shift from older tolerancing practices matters to employers.
  • Show that you follow parts beyond the screen, up to manufacturing and assembly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every CAD tool you opened once instead of the ones you use daily.
  • Attaching confidential customer drawings to an application.
  • Forgetting to mention 2D drawing skills, which remain essential for production.
  • Describing projects without saying your part in them.

Working as a mechanical design draughtsman in France

The title is not regulated. Typical French diplomas are the BTS Conception des produits industriels (CPI), the BTS CPRP, the BUT Génie mécanique et productique (GMP) and some Bac+3 licences in mechanical design. A certified CAD training is often enough for experienced machinists moving into design. French employers expect drawings to follow ISO standards and French-language technical documentation. Some defence projects require a security clearance (habilitation), which the employer applies for. Search for « dessinateur-projeteur mécanique », « dessinateur industriel », « projeteur CAO » or « technicien bureau d'études mécanique ».

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between dessinateur and dessinateur-projeteur?

A dessinateur mostly produces drawings and models from a defined design. A dessinateur-projeteur also designs: proposes solutions, sizes components and chooses manufacturing options. The projeteur title usually comes with more autonomy and experience, and job ads often use both words together.

Should I include a portfolio with my resume?

Yes if you can. A PDF of a few pages with assemblies, exploded views and one complete drawing makes a strong impression. Use school projects, personal work or images your employer agreed to share, and blur customer logos or part numbers.

Is CATIA required for aeronautics jobs in France?

In aeronautics and part of automotive, CATIA V5 or 3DEXPERIENCE is the norm, so it is close to a requirement. In special machinery and SMEs, SolidWorks and TopSolid dominate. If you only know one tool, mention any training planned on the other.
