IT technician resume example

An IT technician in France (technicien or technicienne informatique) is the person users call when a laptop will not boot, a printer has vanished from the network or a new hire needs a workstation by Monday.

The job splits into several flavours: helpdesk technician answering tickets by phone and remote control, on-site support technician (technicien de proximité) walking from desk to desk, and field technician driving between client sites for an IT services company. Daily tasks include imaging and deploying PCs, creating accounts in Active Directory, replacing faulty parts, setting up phones and Wi-Fi, and logging every action in a ticketing tool such as GLPI. During a fleet renewal or an office move, the technician also prepares, labels and installs dozens of machines on a tight schedule.

Career change

Former retail sales advisor retraining as an IT support technician through a titre professionnel « Technicien d'assistance en informatique ». Years of customer service taught me to stay patient with frustrated users and to explain a fix in plain words.

Tips

  • State the support levels you handle (N1, N2) and the size of the park.
  • Mention your driving licence and mobility for field or multi-site roles.
  • Name the tools you used daily, especially the ticketing and deployment tools.
  • Include one or two short user feedback situations rather than a list of qualities.
  • Add certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft only if you actually hold them.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming expert network or server skills that the interview will quickly test.
  • Omitting soft skills, when half of the job is talking to users.
  • Writing a long list of software without context or level.
  • Forgetting to mention apprenticeship periods, which count as real experience in France.

Working as an IT technician in France

IT support is not a regulated job in France. Employers expect a bac to bac+2 in computing: the BTS SIO, a BUT, or a titre professionnel such as « Technicien d'assistance en informatique » or « Technicien supérieur systèmes et réseaux ». Apprenticeship (alternance) is a very common way in. Certifications such as CompTIA A+ or CCNA are a plus but not required. A driving licence is often needed for field roles. Working in French with users is expected in most posts. Search for « technicien informatique », « technicien support », « technicien helpdesk », « technicien de proximité » or « technicien d'exploitation ».

Frequently asked questions

Is a BTS enough to find a job as an IT technician?

Yes. The BTS SIO and the BUT are the most common entry routes, and titres professionnels such as « Technicien d'assistance en informatique » or « Technicien supérieur systèmes et réseaux » are well known by employers. A bachelor's degree helps later if you want to move into systems administration.

What is the difference between helpdesk and proximité?

A helpdesk technician works mainly by phone and remote control from a central desk. A technicien de proximité is on site, handles hardware, deployments and the users who cannot be helped remotely. Say clearly which one you have done, as recruiters often hire for one specific setting.

Should I mention gaming or home-built PCs?

Only briefly, in an interests line, unless it is your only hands-on experience. For a first job, a home lab with a domain controller, a NAS or a small network is worth describing in a projects section, because it shows practical skills a recruiter can ask you about.
