Dishwasher cover letter example

For a dishwasher position, a cover letter is short. Many chefs do not read long letters, but a few lines in an email or on a note with your resume show you are serious.

Say when you are available, where you have worked and that you know the pace of a kitchen.

Subject: Dishwasher position, available from [date]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the dishwasher position at [Restaurant name]. I live in [neighbourhood], close to the restaurant, and I can work lunch and dinner services, including weekends and public holidays.

I worked for [x] months as a dishwasher at [Previous restaurant], a brasserie in [City]. I ran the dish machine during the rush, washed the pots by hand and cleaned the kitchen and cold rooms at the end of the evening, following the cleaning plan. I am used to keeping the pace when the plates come back all at once, and to giving the cooks what they need without being asked twice.

When it was quieter, I helped with prep: peeling vegetables, washing salad and portioning desserts. I would like to keep learning in the kitchen and, later, to train as a commis.

I can come in for a trial shift whenever suits you. You can reach me at [phone number].

Kind regards,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply in person instead?

Yes, and for this job it often works best. Go between services, around three in the afternoon, ask for the chef and bring a printed resume. Avoid arriving at noon or in the evening when the kitchen is busy; nobody will have time to talk.

My French is basic. Is that a problem?

Less than in other jobs, because the instructions are short and repetitive. You will still need to understand the cooks during service and safety rules for products. Say your level honestly in the letter; many kitchens in big cities work with multilingual teams.

Should I mention I am a student?

Yes, and give your timetable. Restaurants regularly hire students for evenings and weekends. Telling the chef exactly when you are free avoids a mismatch after the trial shift, and the rota can be built around your classes and exams.
