Waiter cover letter example

Restaurant managers often skim cover letters for three things: experience in a similar type of establishment, availability, and attitude. A short, warm letter that mentions their restaurant and describes your service in concrete terms will stand out.

If you speak several languages, say so early.

Subject: Application for Waiter position, [Restaurant name]

Dear [Manager's name],

I am applying for the waiter position at [Restaurant name]. I had dinner at your restaurant recently and noticed how the team moved between the room and the terrace without a single table waiting for its bill, with a short menu that is easy to explain to guests.

I have [x] years of experience in restaurant service. At [Brasserie] in [City], I worked as chef de rang on a section of around [x] tables, taking orders on the handheld, advising guests on dishes and wines by the glass, and coordinating timings with the kitchen during busy services. Before that, I spent two summers at [Beach restaurant], where I learned to keep a terrace running smoothly when every table is full.

I speak English and French fluently, which helps with international guests, and I always check allergens with the kitchen before answering a question. I am used to split shifts and available evenings and weekends.

I can drop by with my resume between services, or come in for a trial lunch if that suits you better.

Kind regards,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter needed for a waiter job?

Often not. Many restaurants hire on a resume dropped off in person, a phone call and a trial service. A short letter or a few lines in your email helps when you apply online, especially for hotels and higher-end restaurants that receive many applications.

Can I apply in person?

Yes, it is common in France. Go outside service hours, typically mid-afternoon, with a printed resume, and ask to speak to the manager. Be brief and say when you are available. Follow up with an email if the manager asks you to.

How do I mention my languages?

In the second sentence or in the experience paragraph, with a clear level. For restaurants in tourist areas, hotels and international cities, languages are a strong argument. Mention any situation where you used them, such as explaining the menu to foreign guests.
