Dishwasher resume example

In a French restaurant kitchen, the dishwasher (le plongeur) keeps the whole service moving.

During the rush, plates, glasses and cutlery come back in waves and the cooks need clean pans before they run out, so you load the hood-type machine, scrub the pots that cannot go in it (la batterie) and send everything back to the right station. Before and after service, you clean the floors, the cold rooms and the work surfaces following the cleaning plan, and you take out bins sorted by type. In many places the dishwasher also helps with simple prep: peeling vegetables, washing salad, portioning desserts. You check deliveries, put stock away by date and keep detergents stored apart from food. The job is physical, on your feet in a hot, wet room, often with a break between lunch and dinner.

Career change

After [x] years in warehouse work, I want to join a restaurant kitchen. I am used to physical effort, early starts and following procedures, and I would like to learn kitchen prep alongside the dishwashing.

Tips

  • Put your availability right under your name: evenings, weekends, split shifts. It is the first thing a chef checks.
  • Name the kitchens where you worked and their type (brasserie, canteen, hotel), even for short contracts.
  • Mention any prep you have done; it shows you can move up to commis.
  • If you hold the CQP Plongeur officier de cuisine or have followed a food hygiene course, list it with the year.
  • Keep it to one short page. A chef reads it in a minute.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a long profile paragraph instead of availability and experience.
  • Leaving gaps unexplained when short seasonal contracts would fill them.
  • Not giving a phone number that you actually answer.

Working as a dishwasher in France

Search for plongeur or plongeuse, plongeur en restauration, or plongeur batterie when the job is focused on pots and pans. In larger kitchens the title can be plongeur officier de cuisine. No diploma is required. The CQP Plongeur officier de cuisine exists and can help, and a CAP Cuisine is the usual next step for those who want to cook. Contracts generally follow the hotel and restaurant collective agreement (convention HCR), with split shifts and weekend work. Seasonal jobs in ski resorts and coastal towns often include housing. International students may take part-time hours on their student permit; other non-EU workers need a permit that allows employment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to be hired as a dishwasher?

No. It is one of the most common first jobs in French kitchens and many chefs hire without experience. What they check is your reliability, your availability and whether you can handle the pace. A short trial shift is common before the contract is signed.

Is a resume even necessary for this job?

It helps, even if many dishwashers are hired after walking in. A one-page resume left at the restaurant between services gives the chef your contact details and availability. Temp agencies specialised in hospitality also ask for one.

How do I show I want to become a cook?

Add a line about it in your profile and list any prep you have done: peeling, salads, desserts. Chefs often train a good dishwasher as a commis, so saying it openly is a plus, as long as you make clear you will do the dishwashing properly first.
