Room attendant resume example

A room attendant in a French hotel starts the shift with the list of rooms from the head housekeeper (la gouvernante), split between departures and stayovers.

A departure room is stripped and fully remade (à blanc): new linen, bathroom scrubbed and disinfected, minibar checked, amenities replaced, floor vacuumed. A stayover (une recouche) is lighter, with beds made, towels changed on request and bins emptied. You load your trolley in the morning, sort dirty linen for the laundry and report anything broken or missing to maintenance. Lost property goes to reception with a note. Some hotels give a set number of rooms per shift; the gouvernante inspects them before they are released for check-in, so speed only counts if the room passes. The work is physical, with lifting, bending and mattress turning.

Career change

Tips

  • Give the hotel category for each job: a 5-star hotel expects different standards from a budget chain.
  • Give your usual number of rooms per shift, split between departures and stayovers, only if you can explain it at interview.
  • List your availability, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Say if you have worked for a cleaning contractor serving hotels, as many hotels outsource housekeeping.
  • If you have checked rooms or replaced the head housekeeper, write it: it opens the way to gouvernante.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing 'cleaning' as one skill without the details of hotel work.
  • Leaving out short seasonal contracts that show experience.
  • Forgetting the hotel's category or name.

Working as a room attendant in France

Search for femme de chambre or valet de chambre, employé d'étage, and sometimes agent d'hôtellerie or employé de ménage en hôtellerie. No diploma is required. French qualifications include the CAP Commercialisation et services en hôtel-café-restaurant, the Titre professionnel Employé d'étage en hôtellerie and the CQP Employé d'étage; with experience, attendants can move up to gouvernante (head housekeeper). Hotels often outsource housekeeping to cleaning companies, which then apply the cleaning sector agreement rather than the hotel one (convention HCR), so check which contract you are offered and who your employer really is.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diploma to be a room attendant in France?

No. Many hotels hire without a diploma and train you on their standards in the first days. A CAP in hospitality or the CQP Employé d'étage can help, especially in upscale hotels, but experience and reliability are what most head housekeepers look for.

Should I mention working through an agency or cleaning company?

Yes. Many hotels in France use subcontractors for housekeeping, and time spent there is real hotel experience. Write the hotel where you worked as well as the employer name, so the recruiter understands the level of standards.

How long should my resume be?

One page. Put your experience first, with hotel names and categories, then your availability and languages. A short profile line is enough; head housekeepers look mainly at where you have worked and for how long.
