Home help resume example

A home help in France (aide à domicile) keeps a household running for people who cannot manage everything themselves: an older person living alone, a family after a birth or an illness, someone recovering from surgery.

The work is mostly practical. You clean, wash and iron, change the bed, do the shopping with or for the person, prepare meals and sometimes help with paperwork such as sorting the post. In each home you follow the habits of the person: where things go, which products they want used, what they like to eat. Visits are scheduled through the week, sometimes several homes in one day, so you spend time on the road between appointments. Because you see people regularly, you often notice first when someone is eating less, seems confused or has had a fall, and you report it to the service or the family.

Tips

  • Say which towns or neighbourhoods you can cover and how you travel.
  • Mention a driving licence and car if you have them: many services require them outside big cities.
  • List any qualification even if not required, such as the titre professionnel ADVF or a CAP.
  • Include experience with private employers paid through CESU, it counts.
  • Give references from families or services, as trust is central in this job.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing 'cleaning' only, which hides the human side of the job.
  • Omitting availability, the first thing services check.
  • Leaving gaps unexplained when you cared for a family member, which is relevant experience.
  • Presenting personal care skills you are not trained for.

Working as a home help in France

Home help is not a regulated profession in France, and many posts are open without a diploma, which makes it accessible to newcomers with conversational French. Qualifications such as the titre professionnel Assistant de vie aux familles (ADVF) or a CAP in services to people help you progress towards care assistant roles. You can work for a home care service (SAAD), an association, a local social action centre (CCAS) or directly for private individuals paid through CESU, under the collective agreement for private employers. Search for « aide à domicile », « aide ménagère », « employé familial » or « assistant de vie ».

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a diploma to work as a home help in France?

No. Many services hire without a diploma, based on reliability and motivation. A qualification such as the titre professionnel ADVF or a CAP in services to people helps you move towards care assistant roles, and services sometimes fund training for their staff.

Should I say that I do not do personal care?

Yes, if that is the case. Services plan visits according to each worker's skills, and help with washing or transfers is usually given to qualified care assistants. Writing « housekeeping, meals and shopping, no personal care » avoids being sent to a visit you are not prepared for.

How long should my CV be?

One page is enough. Put your area, availability and transport at the top, then your experience, then any training. Recruiters in home care services often read CVs quickly on the phone, so keep the sentences short and clear.
