Social care worker resume example

In France, the accompagnant éducatif et social (AES) supports people who need help with daily life because of age, disability or illness. In a care home for dependent elderly people (EHPAD), the day starts with getting residents up, helping with washing and dressing, then breakfast at their pace.

In a specialised home for adults with disabilities (MAS or FAM), you also run activities, help with meals and use communication tools adapted to each resident. At home, you work alone, cook, help with transfers from bed to chair and note anything worrying for the nurse or family. Each person has an individual support plan (projet personnalisé), and you write short notes after every shift so the next colleague knows how the day went. Night shifts, weekends and lifting are part of the job.

Social care worker with [x] years in a specialised care home (MAS), supporting adults with severe disabilities. I take part in writing individual support plans, run sensory activities and train new colleagues on transfer equipment.

Tips

  • Write the full name of your diploma (Diplôme d'État d'accompagnant éducatif et social) and the year you obtained it.
  • Name the type of establishment for each job (EHPAD, MAS, FAM, IME, home care service): recruiters read this first.
  • Mention the equipment you know, such as ceiling hoists or standing aids.
  • Indicate whether you accept night shifts and weekends.
  • If you worked as an AMP or AVS before the DEAES existed, keep the old title and explain it briefly.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing the job only as 'helping elderly people' without the gestures you actually perform.
  • Leaving out your placements when you have just qualified, although they are your main experience.
  • Hiding night or weekend constraints that will come up in the interview anyway.
  • Using vague words like 'care' without distinguishing personal care from nursing care, which you do not perform.

Working as a social care worker in France

Search for accompagnant éducatif et social (AES), and also the older titles aide médico-psychologique (AMP) and auxiliaire de vie sociale (AVS), still found in ads. The usual diploma is the Diplôme d'État d'accompagnant éducatif et social (DEAES), available through initial training, apprenticeship or validation of experience (VAE). Employers include EHPAD, specialised homes (MAS, FAM), institutes for children with disabilities (IME) and home care services (SAAD). Do not confuse the AES with the AESH, who supports pupils with disabilities in schools under a separate contract with the Éducation nationale. Foreign care qualifications may need recognition, so check with the regional authority (DREETS) before applying.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DEAES compulsory to work as an AES?

The title of accompagnant éducatif et social goes with the DEAES, and most care homes and specialised establishments require it for permanent posts. Some employers hire unqualified staff as care assistants or agents de service and help them obtain the diploma through work-study or validation of experience (VAE).

What is the difference between an AES and an aide-soignant?

The aide-soignant holds a different state diploma and works under a nurse's responsibility on care tasks. The AES focuses on support in daily life, autonomy and social participation. In practice they work side by side in EHPAD, so state clearly on your resume which diploma you hold.

Should I list my placements on my resume?

Yes, especially if you have just qualified. Give each placement its own line with the type of establishment, the public (elderly people, adults with autism, children with disabilities) and two concrete tasks. Recruiters in this sector often hire former trainees and know what a placement involves.
