Nursery nurse resume example

In France, the auxiliaire de puériculture is a qualified carer for babies and young children, working in maternity wards, paediatric units, neonatal care and childcare centres (crèches).

In a maternity ward, the day revolves around newborns: first baths, weighing, watching feeding and jaundice, and showing parents how to change, hold and settle their baby. In a crèche, you welcome children each morning and talk with parents about the night, then follow the group's rhythm: activities chosen for each age, meals, naps, nappy changes, outdoor time. Throughout the day you observe each child's development and note anything unusual for the nurse or the crèche manager. In hospital, care is done with the paediatric nurse and can include taking temperature, helping with treatments and comforting a child during procedures.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Newly qualified auxiliaire de puériculture (DEAP, [year]) with placements in a maternity ward, a crèche and a paediatric unit. Gentle and observant, comfortable explaining baby care to first-time parents.

Experienced

Nursery nurse with [x] years in multi-age crèches and a maternity ward. I set up age-appropriate activities, keep routines steady for each child and build trust with parents at drop-off and pick-up. I know health protocols for allergies and medication in childcare.

Career change

Former nursery school assistant (ATSEM) who completed the DEAP. I already know how to manage a group of young children and work with families, and I now want to care for babies in a crèche or maternity setting.

Tips

  • Start with 'DEAP' and the year: the diploma is required in France for this title.
  • Say which settings you know: maternity, neonatal, paediatrics, crèche, PMI (mother and child health centres).
  • List the age groups you have worked with (babies, toddlers, mixed).
  • Mention up-to-date vaccinations, which are required for the job.
  • Describe one activity or routine you designed, rather than listing qualities.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing your title with CAP AEPE or educator roles on the resume.
  • Leaving out the type of setting for each job.
  • Writing 'I love children' as your main argument.

Working as a nursery nurse in France

Search for auxiliaire de puériculture, the regulated title, in crèches, maternity wards, neonatal and paediatric units and PMI centres. You need the Diplôme d'État d'auxiliaire de puériculture (DEAP), prepared in an IFAP training school or through VAE, and the vaccinations required by the Public Health Code. EU qualifications go through an authorisation procedure; others usually require French training. Related but different roles include the CAP Accompagnant éducatif petite enfance (AEPE), common in crèches, and the éducateur de jeunes enfants (EJE), who holds a higher diploma. Municipal crèches may hire you as a contract worker or through the local civil service.

Frequently asked questions

Is 'nursery nurse' the same as auxiliaire de puériculture?

Close, but not identical. In France, auxiliaire de puériculture is a regulated health profession with a State diploma, working in hospitals as well as crèches. Other childcare staff, such as holders of the CAP AEPE, also work in crèches but cannot use the title or work in hospital units.

Can I use a foreign childcare diploma in France?

For the auxiliaire de puériculture title, you need the DEAP or an authorisation to practise. EU qualifications can be assessed by the regional authority; other diplomas usually require French training. With a non-recognised qualification, you can still apply for unregulated childcare roles in crèches.

Should I put a photo on my resume?

It is optional and cannot be required. In childcare, some recruiters like a friendly, professional photo, but it will not decide the outcome. Your diploma, settings and age groups matter far more.
