Maintenance fitter resume example

A maintenance fitter (mécanicien de maintenance industrielle) looks after the mechanical side of production equipment: gearboxes, pumps, bearings, chains, couplings, hydraulic units.

A typical shift mixes planned work and breakdowns. Planned work means greasing rounds, belt tensioning, alignment checks and part replacements scheduled in the CMMS. Breakdowns mean a line stopped, a noisy bearing or a leaking cylinder, and you have to lock out the machine, dismantle, find the worn part and put everything back together within the production window. Fitters also rebuild subassemblies at the workbench, make small parts on a lathe when the spare is missing, and prepare the big jobs done during annual shutdowns. The electrical and PLC side is usually handled with an electrician or electromechanical colleague.

Tips

  • Name the equipment you repair: pumps, compressors, presses, overhead cranes, conveyors.
  • Show a recurring failure you eliminated, not only repairs.
  • List your certificates: CACES, welding, electrical habilitation level if any.
  • Mention shutdown work, which shows you can prepare and plan.
  • State your shift and on-call experience.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting yourself as a full electromechanic when you only do mechanics.
  • Forgetting safety procedures such as lockout, which recruiters expect to see.
  • Using car-garage vocabulary without translating it to industrial equipment.
  • No mention of the sectors you know.

Working as a maintenance fitter in France

Look for mécanicien de maintenance industrielle, mécanicien d'entretien, technicien de maintenance mécanique or ajusteur-monteur de maintenance. Common qualifications are the Bac pro Maintenance des systèmes de production connectés (MSPC), the BTS Maintenance des systèmes option A and the Titre professionnel Technicien de maintenance industrielle. The profession is not regulated and experience without a diploma is accepted. However, you will need employer-issued authorisations: electrical habilitation under NF C 18-510, CACES certificates for forklifts or aerial platforms (subject to medical fitness), and specific clearances on nuclear or chemical (Seveso) sites. Maintenance contractors and temp agencies are a frequent way in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrical habilitation as a maintenance fitter?

Often a basic one. Even on mechanical work you may need to operate isolators and work near electrical equipment, so many employers ask for BS or BE Manœuvre, or train you to it. The habilitation is issued by each employer after training under standard NF C 18-510.

How do I describe workshop skills like welding or turning?

Put them as support skills for repair: « manufacture of simple repair parts on a conventional lathe », « MIG welding for brackets and guards ». If you hold a welding qualification certificate, give the process and standard.

Is experience from a garage or farm machinery relevant?

Yes. Diagnosis, dismantling and hydraulics transfer well. Translate it into industrial terms and add any training in production equipment, CMMS or industrial safety to show you have made the move.
