Maintenance electrician resume example

A maintenance electrician (électricien de maintenance) keeps electrical installations and equipment working in factories, hospitals, data centres, shopping centres or large office buildings.

The work is driven by diagrams: you trace a fault from the switchboard to the motor, test circuits with a multimeter or insulation tester, replace a breaker, a contactor or an electronic card, and make the installation safe again. Preventive tasks include tightening connections, checking differential protection and updating diagrams after modifications. Before touching anything, you apply the consignation procedure (isolation, lockout, verification of absence of voltage), because in France electrical work is strictly framed by the NF C 18-510 standard. Depending on the site, you may also follow up the periodic inspections carried out by an approved body and correct the faults they report.

Tips

  • Put your habilitation symbols (BR, B2V, BC, H0V…) near the top of the resume.
  • Say whether you work in industry, tertiary buildings or both.
  • Mention voltage ranges and installation types you know.
  • Give one example of a fault you traced from the diagram to the cause.
  • List diagram software if you use it (See Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not stating habilitation levels, which blocks the application.
  • Mixing new installation work and maintenance without making the difference clear.
  • Writing « electricity » as a skill instead of naming circuits and equipment.
  • Leaving out on-call and shift experience.

Working as a maintenance electrician in France

Search for électricien de maintenance, électricien de maintenance industrielle, électricien d'entretien or technicien de maintenance électrique; in buildings, also électricien de maintenance tertiaire or multitechnique. Typical diplomas are the CAP Électricien, the Bac pro MELEC, the Brevet professionnel Électricien, the BTS Électrotechnique and the BUT GEII. A diploma is not legally required, but an electrical habilitation is: under standard NF C 18-510, your employer issues it after training and a competence check, and it defines exactly what work you may do. Foreign electricians therefore usually go through a French habilitation course. Nuclear power plants add specific clearances.

Frequently asked questions

What do habilitation symbols like B2V or BC mean?

They describe what you are allowed to do: B for low voltage, H for high voltage, then 1 or 2 for executor or work leader, V when work near live parts is allowed, R for troubleshooting and repair, C for carrying out lockout. Recruiters read them as a precise skill level.

Is my foreign electrical licence valid in France?

French habilitation is not a licence you carry from country to country. Your new employer issues it after checking your competence, usually after a training course of a few days. Your foreign qualifications still count as proof of experience.

Should I separate industrial and building maintenance on my resume?

Yes, if you have both. Industrial employers want motor control and production equipment; building managers want lighting, HVAC power and safety systems. Group your experience so each reader sees the part that concerns them.
