Civil engineer resume example

Civil engineering in France splits into a few distinct careers, and job titles tell you which one. An ingénieur études or ingénieur structure works in a design office: sizing concrete, steel or timber structures under the Eurocodes, writing calculation notes and checking the drawings produced by projeteurs.

An ingénieur travaux works for a contractor, runs a site budget, plans the works with the conducteurs de travaux and deals with subcontractors and the client's project manager. An ingénieur études de prix prepares tenders: quantities, methods, schedules and cost estimates. Others specialise in bridges and tunnels (ouvrages d'art), geotechnics or energy retrofit. In all cases, you work with French public procurement rules, standards written in French and a strong site culture.

Tips

  • Make clear which path you follow: design office, site, tenders or a specialty.
  • Name the structures and budgets you have handled, using brackets if confidential.
  • List calculation and BIM software precisely.
  • Mention French standards and procurement documents you know.
  • Add your language level in French honestly, as it decides many interviews.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a generic civil engineer profile without a specialty.
  • Listing every software from university without daily use.
  • Forgetting to translate your degree into French terms (Bac+5, master, diplôme d'ingénieur).
  • Overstating responsibility on large projects where you were an assistant.

Working as a civil engineer in France

Civil engineering is not a regulated profession in France, but employers expect a Bac+5: a diplôme d'ingénieur (ESTP, École des Ponts, INSA, ENTPE, CESI and others) or a master's in civil engineering. The protected title is « ingénieur diplômé », reserved for CTI-accredited programmes. Engineers are hired with cadre status. Structures are designed under the Eurocodes with French national annexes. Search « ingénieur génie civil », « ingénieur structure », « ingénieur travaux », « ingénieur études de prix », « ingénieur ouvrages d'art » or « ingénieur méthodes BTP ».

Frequently asked questions

Is the title ingénieur protected in France?

The job title « ingénieur » is not protected, but the title « ingénieur diplômé » is reserved for graduates of programmes accredited by the Commission des titres d'ingénieur (CTI). A foreign master's degree is valued, and an ENIC-NARIC statement can help employers compare it.

Ingénieur travaux or conducteur de travaux?

A conducteur de travaux manages one or several sites day to day. An ingénieur travaux usually oversees larger projects or several conducteurs, with responsibility for budget and client relations. Titles vary between companies, so read the tasks in the offer carefully.

Do I need French for civil engineering jobs?

For most roles, yes. Site meetings, contracts and standards are in French. Export and international departments of large groups may work in English, but even they expect a working level of French for exchanges with the head office.
