Construction manager resume example

In France, the construction manager (conducteur de travaux) runs one or several sites on behalf of the contractor, from preparation to handover.

Before work starts, you study the tender documents, break down the budget, plan the phases, select and contract subcontractors and prepare the safety plan. During the works, you visit sites several times a week, lead the weekly site meeting with the client's project manager and the architect, approve execution drawings, follow costs against budget, negotiate change orders and invoice monthly progress. You manage site supervisors, who run daily operations. At the end, you organise the pre-handover inspection, lift the reserves noted at handover, compile the as-built file and settle the final account. Much of the job happens at a desk, on the phone and in meetings.

Tips

  • State the type of projects and your role from preparation to final account.
  • Give project sizes with placeholders if you do not want to share figures.
  • Show that you manage costs, not only schedules.
  • Mention the software you use for planning, estimating and document management.
  • Highlight experience with public clients and public procurement rules if you have it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Describing site supervisor tasks instead of management responsibilities.
  • Leaving out budget and margin responsibility.
  • Not stating the type of contractor: general contractor, trade contractor, developer.
  • Ignoring handover and final account, which show you finish projects.

Working as a construction manager in France

Search for conducteur de travaux, conducteur de travaux principal, ingénieur travaux or, for senior roles, directeur de travaux. The role is not regulated: employers recruit from engineering schools and Bac+5 programmes in civil engineering, and also promote experienced site supervisors with a BTS Bâtiment or Travaux publics. Positions are usually under cadre status, sometimes ETAM for junior profiles. French construction relies on specific contractual practices: the handover (réception des travaux) with reserves, the one-year completion guarantee, the ten-year liability (garantie décennale) and public procurement rules for public clients. Fluent French is expected for site meetings and contract documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is a construction manager in France the same as in the UK or US?

Not exactly. The French conducteur de travaux works for the contractor and manages budget, schedule and teams. The client side is represented by a project manager (maître d'œuvre) such as an architect or engineering firm. A senior role above is directeur de travaux.

Do I need an engineering degree?

Not always. Many construction managers come from engineering schools or a Bac+5 in civil engineering, but others progressed from site supervisor after a BTS and years of experience. Show your path clearly and the responsibilities you held.

Should I mention BIM skills?

Yes, if you have used a BIM model for coordination, clash detection or quantity checks. Large contractors increasingly use digital models on projects. Be precise about what you did rather than simply listing the software.
