DevOps engineer resume example

A DevOps engineer makes sure code written by developers reaches production quickly and without breaking anything.

Most days mix building and fixing: maintaining CI/CD pipelines in GitLab CI, GitHub Actions or Jenkins, writing Terraform for cloud resources, packaging services in Docker and running them on Kubernetes, and tuning the monitoring (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK) so the team hears about a problem before customers do. When an incident happens, you join the on-call rotation, find the cause and write the post-mortem. In France, many DevOps engineers work for an ESN (IT services company) and are placed on client projects, often in banking, insurance or public administration, where change management and security reviews slow things down compared with start-ups. Others work in-house for SaaS companies or French cloud providers such as OVHcloud or Scaleway.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Engineering school graduate with a year-long apprenticeship in the platform team at [Company], where I automated server provisioning with Ansible and moved the build pipeline from Jenkins to GitLab CI. Comfortable on Linux, learning Kubernetes in production with an experienced team.

Experienced

DevOps engineer with [x] years on cloud platforms for banking and e-commerce clients. I design Kubernetes clusters, write reusable Terraform modules and set up the monitoring that the on-call team relies on at night. Used to working with security teams on hardening and audit requirements.

Career change

Former Linux system administrator who spent the last two years automating my own work with Ansible, Python and Docker. I hold the CKA certification and want to join a platform team where infrastructure is treated as code from the start.

Tips

  • Name the exact tools and versions you have run in production, not only those you followed a tutorial on.
  • Describe the scale you worked at: number of services, clusters, environments or teams supported.
  • Link to a GitHub or GitLab repository with clean Terraform or pipeline code if you can share it.
  • Mention on-call experience explicitly, as many French job ads list « astreintes » as part of the role.
  • List certifications such as CKA, AWS Solutions Architect or Terraform Associate with the year obtained.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A wall of logos with no indication of what you actually built or maintained.
  • Calling yourself DevOps while every bullet describes manual server administration.
  • Leaving out the business context: a recruiter wants to know if you supported a bank, a SaaS or an e-commerce site.
  • Hiding that your experience was in an ESN mission rather than in-house, which French recruiters will ask about anyway.

Working as a devOps engineer in France

No diploma or licence is legally required to work as a DevOps engineer in France. Most employers expect a Bac+5 (engineering school or master's in computer science), but a Bac+2 or Bac+3 such as the BUT Informatique or BUT Réseaux et télécommunications, combined with solid experience, is common in operations teams. Work-study (« alternance ») is a frequent entry route. Projects for health or public clients may involve HDS-certified hosting or the ANSSI SecNumCloud qualification. Many roles include paid on-call duty (« astreintes »). Search for « ingénieur DevOps », « ingénieur SRE », « ingénieur cloud » and « administrateur systèmes DevOps ».

Frequently asked questions

Should I put certifications on a DevOps resume for France?

Yes, especially CKA, CKAD and cloud provider certifications. French ESNs often sell their consultants to clients with these certifications listed, so they carry weight at the screening stage. Put them in a short dedicated section near the top, with the year, and make sure your experience backs them up.

Is it a problem if I only know one cloud provider?

Not usually. Recruiters care more about solid infrastructure-as-code and Kubernetes skills than about a specific cloud. State clearly which provider you know well, and mention any exposure to French providers like OVHcloud or Scaleway if you have it, since some public and regulated clients require them.

Should I mention my homelab on a DevOps resume?

Yes if you are junior or changing career, in a short projects section: a small Kubernetes cluster, Terraform for your own cloud account, a pipeline that deploys a personal app. Link the repository and expect the interviewer to ask why you made each choice. Once you have production experience, keep it to one line.
