Data engineer resume example

A data engineer builds and runs the pipelines that move data from where it is produced (applications, ERPs, CRM, sensors, partner files) to where it is analysed.

Concretely, you write ingestion jobs, transform raw tables into clean models with SQL and dbt or Spark, schedule everything in Airflow or a similar orchestrator, and make sure the morning dashboards are not empty because a source changed its format overnight. You also handle data quality checks, access rights and costs on the cloud warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks). Data analysts and data scientists are your main internal clients. In France, data engineers are found in large groups modernising old data warehouses, in consulting firms and ESNs, and in start-ups where they often build the data platform from scratch.

Profile

Data engineer with [x] years building cloud data platforms for retail and banking. I design ingestion and transformation pipelines, model data for analytics teams and keep the warehouse costs under control. Experienced with legacy migrations from on-premise databases to Snowflake.

Experience

Data Engineer, [Company], [City]

[month year] to present

  • Migrated [x] nightly ETL jobs from an on-premise Oracle warehouse to Snowflake with dbt and Airflow
  • Built an incremental ingestion pipeline for the e-commerce events stream with Kafka
  • Added dbt tests and freshness alerts so analysts know when a dashboard relies on late data
  • Reduced warehouse costs by reworking the heaviest queries and partitioning large tables
  • Implemented column-level masking on personal data with the security and legal teams

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Recent computer science engineering graduate with an apprenticeship in the data team at [Company], where I wrote Airflow pipelines to load sales data into BigQuery and added data quality tests in dbt. Comfortable with Python, SQL and Git workflows.

Experienced

Data engineer with [x] years building cloud data platforms for retail and banking. I design ingestion and transformation pipelines, model data for analytics teams and keep the warehouse costs under control. Experienced with legacy migrations from on-premise databases to Snowflake.

Career change

Former BI developer with years of SQL and ETL work on SSIS and Oracle. I trained in Python, Spark and Airflow and want to move into a modern data engineering role where my knowledge of business data models remains useful.

Tips

  • Describe the volume and type of data you handled, without inventing figures you cannot explain.
  • Show the whole chain: source, ingestion, transformation, consumption.
  • Mention migrations from legacy systems; French groups have many of them and value that experience.
  • Include testing, monitoring and documentation, which separate data engineers from script writers.
  • Name your cloud and warehouse explicitly, since job ads in France often filter on them.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting yourself as a data scientist when you want an engineering role.
  • Listing big data tools without showing a single pipeline you owned.
  • Ignoring data governance and access rights.
  • Making the resume so technical that a recruiter cannot see what problem you solved.

Working as a data engineer in France

Anyone can work as a data engineer in France: the title is not protected. Most job ads ask for a Bac+5 from an engineering school or a master's in computer science, though experienced BI developers and self-taught engineers also get hired. Work-study (« alternance ») during a master's is a common entry route. Pipelines handling customer data must respect GDPR, overseen by the CNIL, and some public or health projects require data to stay in the EU or in certified French hosting. Search with « data engineer », « ingénieur data », « ingénieur big data », « analytics engineer » and « développeur ETL ».

Frequently asked questions

Should I call myself data engineer or analytics engineer?

Use the title that matches the job you target. Analytics engineer is used for roles centred on dbt and data modelling for analysts; data engineer covers ingestion, infrastructure and pipelines as well. In France, data engineer remains the most searched title, so keep it if your work spans both.

Is Spark still worth mentioning?

Yes. Many French banks, insurers and industrial groups run Spark on Databricks or on their own clusters. If you have used it, say for what volume and type of processing. If not, focus on SQL-based transformation, which is now the core of many platforms.

How do I show data quality work on a resume?

Write a bullet about the tests, alerts or contracts you introduced and what they prevented, for example wrong revenue figures reaching the management dashboard. This kind of example speaks to hiring managers who have suffered from unreliable data.
