Product owner resume example

A product owner decides what the development team builds next and makes sure it is worth building. You maintain the backlog, write user stories with clear acceptance criteria, take part in sprint planning, review and refinement, and answer developers' questions throughout the sprint.

Between ceremonies, you talk to users, support teams and business stakeholders to understand what is not working, and you look at usage data to check whether the last release changed anything. The hardest part is saying no, or « not now », to requests that do not serve the product's goals. In France, the title is used in two different ways: in start-ups and software companies it is close to product manager, while in banks, insurers and large groups the PO often sits in a « squad » and translates business needs for an IT team, sometimes as a consultant placed by an ESN.

Career change

Former customer support team lead who spent years reporting bugs and user feedback to the product team. I now want to work on the other side, building features with a development team, and I hold the PSPO certification.

Tips

  • Describe the product, its users and the team you worked with in one line per role.
  • Show outcomes, not only output: what changed for users after a feature shipped.
  • Mention your methods and certifications (PSPO, CSPO, SAFe POPM) without letting them replace examples.
  • Say whether you worked in-house or as a consultant placed by an ESN, since French recruiters will ask.
  • Include any domain knowledge (banking, insurance, health) that the target company needs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A resume that reads like a Scrum glossary.
  • Taking credit for the whole product's success without saying what you decided.
  • Leaving out the users: who they were and how you learned about their needs.
  • Confusing project management (deadlines, budgets) with product ownership.

Working as a product owner in France

Product owner is not a regulated job in France. Employers usually expect a Bac+5 from a business school, an engineering school or a master's in computer science or digital management. Scrum certifications (PSPO, CSPO) and SAFe are often requested by large companies. Many positions are filled by consultants from ESNs or freelancers, with contracts « en régie » on client sites, so check whether an ad is for an in-house role. Search with « product owner », « product manager », « chef de produit digital » and « business analyst » for nearby roles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between product owner and product manager in France?

It depends on the company. In start-ups and software companies, the two are often merged, with a focus on discovery and strategy. In large groups using agile at scale, the product owner is closer to the team and the backlog, while a product manager or business owner sets the direction. Read the job ad carefully.

Is a PSPO or CSPO certification necessary?

It is not required, but many large French companies and ESNs mention it in job ads and use it as a screening filter. If you have it, list it. If you do not, real examples of backlog management and user research count more.

How do I show impact if I cannot share figures?

Describe the change in qualitative terms: fewer support requests, a journey that users completed without help, a feature adopted by the sales team. Use placeholders like [x] for numbers you can explain in the interview, and never invent precise results.
