Cybersecurity engineer resume example

A cybersecurity engineer protects an organisation's systems and data, and the job looks very different depending on where you sit. In a SOC (security operations centre), you analyse alerts from the SIEM and EDR tools, investigate suspicious activity and escalate real incidents.

On the build side, you harden servers and cloud configurations, manage identity and access, review the architecture of new projects and run vulnerability scans. Offensive roles (pentesters) test applications and networks the way an attacker would and write reports with fixes. Governance roles map risks, prepare ISO 27001 audits and write security policies. In France, the field is shaped by the ANSSI, the national cybersecurity agency, which publishes hardening guides and qualifies service providers, and by the NIS2 directive, which brings many more companies and public bodies under security obligations.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Engineering school graduate specialised in cybersecurity, with an apprenticeship in the SOC of [Company] where I triaged SIEM alerts, wrote detection rules and took part in incident investigations. Active on Root-Me and Hack The Box, and holder of the ANSSI SecNumacadémie certificate.

Experienced

Career change

Tips

  • Specify your area: defensive (SOC, CERT), build (architecture, IAM), offensive (pentest) or governance.
  • Describe incidents and audits you handled in general terms, without client names or sensitive details.
  • List certifications with their year: OSCP, CEH, CISSP, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, cloud security certifications.
  • Mention CTF platforms or bug bounty results if you are a junior candidate.
  • Say whether you hold or have held a French security clearance, if relevant and allowed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Revealing confidential details about a client or employer's vulnerabilities.
  • Listing offensive tools without explaining what you tested.
  • Using « expert » in the title with little experience.
  • Ignoring the business side: recruiters want to see that you understand risk, not only technology.

Working as a cybersecurity engineer in France

Cybersecurity engineer is not a regulated job in France, but parts of the sector are. Most employers ask for a Bac+5 from an engineering school or a master's in computer security, often with work-study (« alternance »). The ANSSI qualifies providers such as audit firms (PASSI) and incident response firms, which then expect their staff to meet its standards. Defence and some public sector posts require a security clearance (« habilitation »), which can be difficult for non-French nationals. NIS2 extends obligations to many organisations. Search with « ingénieur cybersécurité », « analyste SOC », « pentesteur », « consultant cybersécurité » and « RSSI ».

Frequently asked questions

Which certifications matter most in France?

It depends on the role. OSCP is respected for pentesting, CISSP and ISO 27001 Lead Auditor or Implementer for governance, and vendor certifications for cloud and SOC work. The free ANSSI SecNumacadémie MOOC is a good first step for beginners. None is legally required, but they help at screening.

Can I mention incidents I handled?

Yes, in general terms: the type of attack, your role and what you did. Never give the client name, internal details or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement. Recruiters will check how careful you are with information, so this discretion counts in your favour.

How do I get a first job without experience?

Show practical work: CTF rankings, a homelab, write-ups of challenges, contributions to open source security tools. Many first jobs are in SOCs or in work-study programmes. Present these skills like real experience, with what you learned and the tools used.
