Software developer resume example

Software developers in France work in three main settings, and the day changes with each. In a product company or start-up, you build and maintain one application, take part in sprint rituals, review pull requests and ship to production through a CI/CD pipeline.

In an ESN (digital services company, the French equivalent of an IT consultancy), you are placed with a client, a bank or an insurer for example, and join their team for months or years, often on older Java or .NET systems. In a large company's internal IT department, you work on business applications with functional teams who write specifications. Everywhere, the job combines writing code, fixing bugs reported by users, writing tests and documentation, and discussing technical choices with colleagues. Remote work for part of the week is common.

Tips

  • Group technologies by type (languages, frameworks, databases, tools) instead of a long list.
  • Link to a GitHub or GitLab profile with code you are happy to show.
  • For each job, say what you built and who used it, not only the stack.
  • If you worked in an ESN, name the client's sector and the project, not only the consultancy.
  • Keep the CV to one or two pages; French recruiters do not expect US-style long CVs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every technology you touched once, with no sign of depth.
  • Rating skills with stars or percentages, which recruiters ignore.
  • Forgetting the business context of the applications you built.
  • No link to code, even small personal projects, for a junior profile.

Working as a software developer in France

Developer is not a regulated profession in France. Common French paths are the BUT informatique (Bac+3), engineering schools and university master's degrees (Bac+5), and professional titles from adult training such as Développeur web et web mobile (DWWM) or Concepteur développeur d'applications (CDA). Many developers are hired by ESN consultancies and placed with clients, while others work in product companies or internal IT departments. Search with « développeur », « ingénieur logiciel », « ingénieur études et développement » (a common ESN title) and the main language, for example « développeur Java ».

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a French degree to work as a developer in France?

No, the job is not regulated. Employers look at your skills and projects first. A foreign computer science degree is fine; for non-EU candidates the question is usually the work permit, for which a master's level degree can help with the Talent passport.

Is it better to work for an ESN or a product company?

An ESN lets you see several clients and sectors quickly and often hires juniors and foreign profiles. A product company gives more ownership of one application. Both are common first jobs in France; ask about the assignment and its length during interviews.

Can I work in English as a developer in France?

In start-ups, international groups and some scale-ups, yes, especially in Paris. Many ESN assignments and public-sector projects are in French, with French specifications. Basic French makes daily life easier and widens the choice of employers.
