Software engineer resume example

An ingénieur informatique (often called ingénieur logiciel or ingénieur études et développement) designs, writes and maintains software, but with more responsibility for architecture and technical choices than a developer just starting out.

In practice, you turn a functional need into a technical design, split it into tasks, write the core code, review others' work and make sure the system holds under load and stays secure. Sectors differ a lot in France: banks and insurers run large Java and .NET systems, aerospace, defence and automotive firms in Toulouse or around Paris rely on C, C++ and embedded software with strict quality standards, while software publishers and scale-ups work with cloud-native services in Go, Kotlin or Python. Many engineers start in an ESN and move to a client or a product company after a few years.

Summaries for your profile

Entry level

Engineering school graduate in computer science, with a six-month final internship at [Company] on a Java microservice handling payment flows. I wrote the service, its tests and the monitoring dashboards, and presented the design to the architecture committee.

Experienced

Software engineer for [x] years, first in an ESN on banking projects, then in a software publisher. I design backend services, lead technical choices within my team and work on reliability: observability, performance tests and incident reviews.

Career change

Former mechanical engineer moving into software after a master's in computer science. I have worked on simulation tools and industrial data for years, and I now want to build software full time, ideally for engineering or industrial users.

Tips

  • Put the sector next to the stack: banking, aerospace, e-commerce. French recruiters filter on both.
  • Name your engineering school or master's degree and specialisation clearly.
  • Show design responsibilities, not only coding: choices made, trade-offs, reviews.
  • For embedded roles, mention the standards you worked with, such as DO-178 or ISO 26262.
  • If you worked through an ESN, name the end clients and the length of each assignment.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing ESN assignments without clients or projects, which looks vague.
  • Writing "engineer" for a role that was mainly support or testing.
  • Ignoring soft skills when the role includes leading others.
  • Using acronyms only your former team understood.

Working as a software engineer in France

Software engineering is not a regulated profession, but the title "ingénieur diplômé" is reserved for graduates of CTI-accredited schools, and many large employers recruit primarily from engineering schools or university master's programmes. ESNs (IT services companies) are a major entry point and place engineers with clients. Defence and some aerospace positions can require security clearance and may be limited by nationality. English is common in product teams, less so in banks and public sector projects. Search for "ingénieur logiciel", "ingénieur informatique", "ingénieur études et développement", "ingénieur backend", "ingénieur logiciel embarqué" or "software engineer".

Frequently asked questions

Does "ingénieur" mean I need an engineering degree?

The protected title in France is "ingénieur diplômé", awarded by schools accredited by the CTI. The job title ingénieur informatique is used more freely, and university master's graduates are hired as engineers. Many employers still filter on engineering schools for certain positions, especially in large groups.

How do I present ESN assignments?

Group them under the ESN with one sub-entry per client: client sector, project, duration, your role and the stack. This shows recruiters the variety of contexts you have worked in. Highlight the assignments closest to the job you are applying for.

Should a senior engineer's résumé be one page?

Two pages are fine for a senior profile in France. Keep the most recent and relevant experience detailed and summarise older roles in one or two lines. The first half of page one should already show your level and your main technical area.
