Registered nurse cover letter example

Nursing directors and unit managers in France receive many applications, but nurse shortages mean they read them carefully for fit. Show that you know the unit's patients and pace, mention your diploma and registration, and be clear about shifts.

Concrete care situations convince more than talk of vocation.

Subject: Application for a registered nurse position, cardiology unit

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the registered nurse position in the cardiology unit of [Hospital name]. I qualified from the IFSI in [City] in [year] and I am registered with the Ordre national des infirmiers. My final placement in cardiac intensive care confirmed that this is the field I want to work in.

Since then I have worked for [x] months in the cardiology unit of [Previous hospital]. I care for patients after angioplasty, monitor telemetry, manage anticoagulant treatments and prepare discharge education with the patient and family. One night, a patient's chest pain returned with ECG changes; I alerted the doctor straight away and prepared the transfer to the cath lab, which was carried out within the hour.

I work in 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends. I also supervise nursing students and enjoy passing on good practice in medication safety.

I would welcome an interview with the cadre de santé of the unit at a time that suits the team's schedule.

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Frequently asked questions

Should I address the nursing director or the unit manager?

The ad usually says. In public hospitals, applications often go to the nursing directorate (direction des soins) or HR, then to the unit manager (cadre de santé). Address the person named, or use 'Madame, Monsieur' if no name is given.

Can I apply in English?

Only if the employer asks, as some international clinics do. French hospitals expect a letter in French, and writing in French shows you can handle handovers and prescriptions. Ask a French-speaking colleague to proofread it.

Is it worth sending a spontaneous application?

Yes. Many hospitals and clinics recruit year-round and keep a pool of candidates for replacements. Send your letter and resume to the nursing directorate, mentioning the units you are interested in and your availability.
