Registered nurse resume example

A registered nurse in France (infirmier or infirmière diplômé d'État, IDE) splits the job between care on prescription and care within the nurse's own role.

On a hospital ward, the shift opens with the handover, then the medication round: checking each prescription in the computerised record, preparing and giving treatments, running infusions, taking blood samples, dressing wounds. You assess each patient's condition, plan care with the nursing assistants and adjust it when something changes, calling the doctor when needed. Admissions and discharges bring paperwork and patient education, such as teaching someone to inject insulin. Outside hospitals, French nurses work in clinics, nursing homes, schools, companies, or as self-employed nurses (infirmiers libéraux) doing home rounds by car. The nursing diagnosis and the care plan are your responsibility, and you answer for them.

Career change

Former [previous profession] who retrained through the IFSI programme. I bring organisation and communication skills from my previous career, and I am now looking for a first position in a surgical unit.

Tips

  • Write 'Diplôme d'État d'infirmier' with the year and the IFSI, and your registration with the Ordre national des infirmiers.
  • For each job, give the unit and the type of establishment: university hospital (CHU), general hospital, private clinic, nursing home.
  • List technical skills relevant to the unit you target: dialysis, chemotherapy, ventilation, paediatrics.
  • Mention extra certifications: blood sampling, AFGSU, wound care university diplomas (DU).
  • Keep it to one or two pages; place the most recent and relevant unit first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using foreign titles (RN, BSN) without the French equivalent.
  • Listing every placement in the same detail as paid jobs.
  • Leaving out the type of shifts you have worked.
  • Forgetting your Ordre registration or RPPS number when you have one.

Working as a registered nurse in France

Search for infirmier or infirmière, IDE (infirmier diplômé d'État), and the specialty: infirmier en bloc, en psychiatrie, en EHPAD, or infirmier libéral for self-employed home care. Nursing is a regulated profession. You need the Diplôme d'État d'infirmier, prepared over three years in an IFSI after admission through Parcoursup or a route for working adults, plus registration with the Ordre national des infirmiers. EU general care nursing diplomas are recognised under European rules; others require an authorisation to practise, sometimes with additional training. A good level of French is checked. Self-employed practice (infirmier libéral) requires a period of prior salaried experience in a care setting.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign-trained nurse work in France?

If you trained in an EU country, general care nursing diplomas are generally recognised automatically, and you register with the Ordre national des infirmiers, which checks your French. With a non-EU diploma, you must apply for authorisation to practise; it can involve compensation measures such as a placement or extra training, and some candidates resume studies in an IFSI.

What is the difference between IDE and specialised nurses?

IDE is the general care nurse. Specialisations require extra training after experience: operating room nurse (IBODE), nurse anaesthetist (IADE), paediatric nurse (puéricultrice) and advanced practice nurse (IPA). Put your specialisation clearly in the headline if you have one.

Should I include my placements as a new graduate?

Yes. With little paid experience, placements show the units you know. List them by type of unit, with one or two lines on what you did, and highlight the one closest to the job you want.
