Medical secretary cover letter example

Doctors and department managers read a medical secretary's letter as a sample of your writing: spelling, layout and clarity count as much as content.

Show that you know the medical environment, that you can handle a busy phone line and that you understand confidentiality.

Subject: Application for the medical secretary position, [Department or practice name]

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to apply for the medical secretary post in the [Department name] at [Hospital name]. I hold the titre professionnel Secrétaire assistant médico-administratif and have worked for [x] years in an orthopaedic surgery department in [City].

My daily work includes typing operative reports and letters from dictation, organising the pre-operative pathway and preparing complete files before each admission. I am used to working with surgeons who dictate late in the day and need their letters sent the next morning, so I organise my day around that rhythm. I also take the department's calls, which taught me to identify quickly when a patient's question needs a nurse.

Your department is moving to a new patient record system this year. I took part in a similar change in my current post and helped colleagues adapt to the new templates, which could be useful during your transition.

I can take a typing test or a trial dictation if you use one in your selection process. I can be reached at [phone] or [email].

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Should I write the letter in French?

Yes. The job involves writing letters and reports in French for doctors and patients, so your letter is also a test. Ask a native speaker to proofread it if needed. If you also speak English, mention it as an asset for patients rather than writing in it.

What if I have no medical experience?

Focus on transferable skills: phone handling, scheduling, confidentiality in previous jobs, writing quality. Then show you have prepared for the medical side, through a terminology course, a placement or a training programme. Practices hiring beginners care about reliability and discretion.

Is it different for a GP practice and a hospital?

Yes. A GP practice wants someone who can run the front desk and the agenda alone. A hospital department expects typing, record management and coordination with nursing teams. Adapt your examples to the setting you apply to.
