Midwife cover letter example

A maternity unit manager (sage-femme coordinatrice) wants to know which areas you can cover from day one, whether you are comfortable with the unit's level of risk and how you fit the rotation.

For PMI or a private practice, the letter should show interest in prevention and continuity of care rather than only deliveries.

Subject: Application for a midwife position, maternity unit, [Hospital name]

Dear [Ms/Mr Last name],

Please find attached my application for the midwife post advertised for your maternity unit. I obtained my Diplôme d'État de sage-femme in [year] and I am registered with the Ordre des sages-femmes. Since then I have worked at [Hospital name], a type 2 maternity unit, where I rotate between the delivery suite, the antenatal ward and the postnatal ward.

In the delivery suite I manage physiological deliveries and I am used to working with the obstetric team when a labour becomes complicated. I also run consultations for low-risk pregnancies and the early prenatal interview, which I find essential for spotting situations of vulnerability early.

Your unit has developed a physiological birth room and offers a choice of positions during labour. I followed a training course on alternative birth positions last year and would like to put it into practice in a team that supports it. I accept twelve-hour shifts, nights and weekends.

I would be pleased to discuss my application with you and to visit the unit. I can be reached at [phone] or [email].

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name]

Frequently asked questions

Who reads a midwife's application in a hospital?

Usually the coordinating midwife of the maternity unit, sometimes together with the human resources department of the hospital. Address your letter to the coordinating midwife by name if you can find it, and send a copy to the HR department if the offer asks for it.

What to write for a PMI post?

Focus on prevention, home visits and work with vulnerable families. Mention any experience with social workers, interpreters or child protection procedures. PMI services are run by the département, so the recruiter will also check that you understand local public service work.

Should I write a letter to join a private practice group?

Yes, a short letter to the midwives already in practice is appreciated. Explain which services you want to offer, how you would share on-call home visits and why you chose that town. Personal contact afterwards matters as much as the letter.
