Nursing assistant cover letter example

Care managers (cadres de santé) and nursing home directors read letters quickly and look for the diploma, the units you know and your shift availability.

A short letter that shows you understand their kind of patients, whether elderly, surgical or psychiatric, makes a difference.

Subject: Application for a nursing assistant position, [Unit name]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the nursing assistant position in the [Unit name] unit at [Establishment name]. I obtained my DEAS in [year] and I have since worked in geriatrics, a field I chose after my placement in a nursing home.

At [Current company], I care for elderly patients with varying levels of dependence. My mornings are mostly hygiene and comfort care, which I adapt so that each patient does what they can on their own. I take vital signs, follow the pressure sore prevention plan and write handovers in the patient record. Last year I noticed a resident drinking less over several days; I reported it to the nurse, who adjusted the care plan before dehydration set in.

I work in 12-hour shifts and I am available for nights and weekends. My AFGSU level 2 is valid until [date].

I am happy to come for an interview and, if the unit offers it, an observation shift (journée d'immersion).

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

  • Why this establishment or this unit

Mistakes to avoid

  • Not mentioning the diploma in the first lines.
  • Speaking of 'vocation' without any care example.
  • Forgetting the shifts you can or cannot work.

Frequently asked questions

Who should I address the letter to?

In hospitals and clinics, to the care manager of the unit or to the nursing director (direction des soins). In nursing homes, to the director or the coordinating nurse. Use the name if it appears in the ad; otherwise 'Madame, Monsieur' is the standard French opening.

Can I apply before I have the diploma?

Yes, in the final weeks of training. Mention the expected date of the jury and your placements. Many establishments hire students for summer replacements or recruit them before graduation, then confirm the contract once the diploma is awarded.

Should I mention a preference for days or nights?

Yes. Units plan staffing around fixed day or night teams and rotating shifts. Being clear avoids an offer that does not suit you. If you accept both, say so: it is a plus for many units, especially in summer.
