Ambulance company managers and hospital SMUR managers want to know your diploma, licence situation and experience with patients, and whether you can take on-call shifts.

The letter should be short and practical, with one example that shows how you behave on a mission.

For the past [x] years I have worked at [Current company], alternating planned transport, dialysis runs and SAMU on-call missions. As chef de bord, I assess the patient, place them in the right position and report to the regulating doctor. On one call to an elderly man who had fallen, I noticed confusion that his family put down to tiredness; I reported it and the doctor redirected us to the stroke unit.

I take care of the vehicle and equipment at each shift change and I train new auxiliaires on handling techniques.

Who recruits ambulance technicians in France?

Mostly private ambulance companies, which handle planned transport and take part in the SAMU on-call system. Hospitals also hire ambulanciers for their SMUR units and internal transfers, usually as public sector staff. Address your letter to the company manager or the hospital HR department.

Is it worth applying as auxiliaire first?

Yes, if you do not have the DEA yet. It lets you discover the job and some companies support their auxiliaires in preparing the diploma, through training leave or apprenticeship. Say in your letter that you plan to take the DEA.

Should I mention my knowledge of the area?

Yes. Knowing the hospitals, clinics and dialysis centres nearby, and how to reach them quickly, is valued. One sentence is enough, especially if you apply to a company outside a big city.
