Legal assistant cover letter example

Lawyers and legal managers reading your letter want to see two things: that you will not miss a deadline and that you understand their area of law.

Write precisely, without errors, and mention the procedures or formalities you already handle. Your letter is itself a sample of your work.

Subject: Application: Assistant juridique, [Department or practice area]

Dear Maître [Name],

I am applying for the assistant juridique position in your [practice area] team. I have spent [x] years supporting lawyers in a business law firm, first in litigation and then in corporate law.

In litigation, I kept the deadline calendar for around [x] files shared by two partners. I prepared submissions and exhibits for filing through the RPVA, handled correspondence with court registries and organised service of documents with commissaires de justice. I learned to check each document twice before filing, especially at the end of the day.

For the past [x] years I have handled corporate housekeeping for a portfolio of [x] client companies: preparing annual meetings and minutes, updating share registers, and filing changes of directors or registered office on the Guichet unique. I also draft standard letters and powers of attorney for lawyers' review.

Your firm advises mid-sized companies on [area], which is close to the files I currently handle. I work with Secib and adapt quickly to new software. I know how much discretion the job requires, both inside and outside the office.

I would be glad to meet you to discuss how I could support your team.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name]

  • Formatting and drafting skills
  • Confidentiality and discretion

Mistakes to avoid

  • Typos or inconsistent formatting, which lawyers notice immediately.

  • Applying to a litigation team with only corporate examples, or the reverse.
  • Using the wrong form of address: in France, a lawyer is addressed as 'Maître'.

Frequently asked questions

How should I address a lawyer in a French cover letter?

Use 'Maître' followed by the surname, both in the greeting and in the body of the letter. For an in-house legal department, address the legal director by name with 'Madame' or 'Monsieur'. Getting this right shows you know the environment.

Should I write in English for an international firm?

Follow the language of the ad. Many international firms in Paris post in English and expect bilingual assistants. If so, write in English and mention your French level clearly, since procedural work in France happens in French.

Can I apply to a notary office with this profile?

Yes, but the vocabulary changes: deeds, property sales, successions and land registry formalities. Notary offices often recruit 'assistant notarial' or 'clerc'. Adapt your examples and mention any training in notarial law if you have it.
