Order picker cover letter example

Warehouse recruiters and temp agencies read quickly. A few lines are enough: the picking methods you know, your CACES, the kind of warehouse you have worked in and the shifts you accept.

If you have worked in cold areas or during peaks, say so.

Subject: Application: Order Picker, [Company], [City] warehouse

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for the order picker position at your [City] warehouse. I have [x] years of experience in retail distribution centres and I am looking for a long-term position in a site close to home.

At [Previous company], I prepared mixed pallets for supermarket deliveries, in dry goods, chilled and frozen areas. I worked with voice picking and RF scanners and drove an electric pallet truck daily. I took care to place heavy and fragile items correctly, because a badly built pallet leads to breakage and complaints from stores. I regularly met the team's accuracy target.

I hold a CACES R489 category 1B and I am trained in manual handling. During inventory periods I also helped with counts and checking locations. I am used to working early mornings and can also work afternoons or nights.

I can start on [date] and come to the warehouse for an interview at short notice, including before an early shift.

Yours faithfully,[First Name Last Name][Phone] | [Email]

What to highlight

  • Picking methods and equipment you use
  • CACES categories held
  • Types of products and warehouses
  • Accuracy and care with goods
  • Shift availability

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a long generic letter for a warehouse role.
  • Not mentioning CACES or equipment.
  • Saying nothing about cold-store work when the ad mentions chilled or frozen areas.
  • Promising speed without a word on accuracy, when wrong items are what stores complain about.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply without warehouse experience?

Yes. Many warehouses train beginners, especially before peak seasons. Highlight any physical or retail work, your reliability and your availability. Taking a short CACES R489 category 1 training can also help you get your first assignment.

Do I need to speak French?

Basic French helps for safety instructions and team communication. Voice picking systems usually work in French, though some sites offer other languages. Mention your level honestly; many warehouses employ people who are still learning French.

Should I apply through a temp agency or directly?

Both work. Temp agencies fill many warehouse jobs quickly and can lead to a permanent contract. Direct applications are useful for permanent positions advertised by logisticians or retailers. You can do both at the same time.
