Hotel receptionist cover letter example

Front office managers want to know three things: your languages, your experience with their type of hotel, and the shifts you can work. The letter itself is also a test, because you will write emails to guests every day.

Keep it clean, polite and specific to the property.

Subject: Application for the receptionist position, [Hotel name]

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

I am applying for the receptionist position at [Hotel name]. I know your hotel through colleagues who recommended it, and its mix of business guests during the week and families at weekends matches what I have worked with so far.

Since [year] I have been front desk agent at [Previous hotel], a [x]-room hotel in [City]. I check guests in and out on Opera, manage bookings from the channel manager and run the night audit when I am on nights. Last winter, during a trade fair, we were overbooked by several rooms; I arranged rooms in a partner hotel and a taxi for each guest, and none of them left a negative review.

I speak French and English fluently and I have a good working level in Spanish. I am used to rotating shifts, including weekends and nights, and to working alone at the desk.

I would be pleased to discuss the position with you and I can start from [date].

Kind regards,[First name Last name][Phone number]

Frequently asked questions

Should I write in French or English?

Match the job ad. For international chains advertising in English, English is fine, but adding a sentence in French shows you can serve French guests. For an independent French hotel, write in French. Either way, proofread carefully: the letter is a sample of your guest emails.

Can I apply to hotels that have not posted an ad?

Yes. Send your resume and a short note to the front office manager or the general manager, especially before the high season. Seasonal hotels on the coast or in the mountains recruit several months ahead.

How formal should the letter be?

Polite and professional, without old-fashioned French formulas if you write in English. A simple 'Kind regards' is fine. In French, use 'Je vous prie d'agréer' only if you are comfortable with it; a shorter 'Bien cordialement' is accepted in emails.
