DevOps engineer cover letter example

Hiring managers for DevOps roles skim the letter to check two things: that you have run real infrastructure, not just labs, and that you understand their context.

Refer to something specific from the job ad, such as a migration to Kubernetes or a move to a sovereign cloud, and explain how you handled a similar situation. Keep it short; the technical detail belongs in the resume and the interview.

Subject: Application for the DevOps Engineer position (ref. [reference])

Dear [Hiring Manager's name],

Your ad for a DevOps Engineer on [website] mentions the migration of your applications to Kubernetes and the creation of a shared delivery platform for your product teams. I have spent the last [x] years working on exactly this kind of project at [Company], and I would like to bring that experience to your team in [City].

At [Company], I moved [x] services from virtual machines to a managed Kubernetes cluster. The hardest part was not the cluster itself but getting each team to adopt the same Helm charts and pipeline templates. I wrote the templates, ran short workshops with the developers and kept a migration board updated so that nobody was surprised on deployment day. Deployment times dropped and rollbacks became a routine operation rather than an emergency.

I also take part in the on-call rotation. After a series of night alerts that turned out to be noise, I reworked our Prometheus rules with the developers so that each alert points to a runbook and a clear owner. Since then, a night call almost always means a real problem.

I would be glad to go through your platform roadmap with your team and show you some of the pipeline templates I maintain.

Yours sincerely,[First name Last name][Phone] | [Email] | [GitHub link]

What to highlight

  • A concrete automation project and what it changed for the development team
  • Your experience with production incidents and on-call
  • The cloud and orchestration tools you have used in production
  • How you work with security teams and compliance requirements
  • Why this company's platform or product interests you

Mistakes to avoid

  • Listing every tool you have touched instead of describing one project in depth.
  • Forgetting to mention on-call, which is often a key question for the team.
  • Using the same letter for an ESN and for an in-house platform team, whose expectations differ.
  • Writing in English to a French company that posted its ad in French without checking which language they expect.

Frequently asked questions

Do French tech companies still expect a cover letter for DevOps jobs?

Many start-ups skip it, but ESNs, banks and large groups often still ask for one, sometimes as a short message in the application form. A focused letter of a few paragraphs helps when your resume alone does not show why you fit their specific stack or sector.

Should I write my letter in French or English?

Follow the language of the job ad. International teams in Paris often work in English, but if the ad is in French, a French letter shows you can handle the meetings, tickets and documentation that come with most client projects. If your French is basic, say so honestly.

What if my DevOps experience comes from personal projects?

Present one project as you would a professional one: what you built, which tools, what broke and how you fixed it. Link the repository. Recruiters for junior roles value a well-maintained homelab or open source contribution, but they will check it during the interview.
